The Kinks - Album by Album (song by song)

I watched 10 minutes of the film and couldn’t continue and I think you’ve nailed down why…complete with the reference to ‘Art Lover.’

The idea/importance/effect of when a listener first hears a song or album has been a recurring theme of this thread. I first heard ‘Art Lover’ on the heels of the release of the abuse report from my school. One of the serial abusers? The art teacher who targeted teenage boys. My two eldest siblings have classmates that were his victims. (And a heated conversation is ongoing right now within the school community as to what to do with a large mural designed and created by this vile creature. The school has been showing it off since 1969!)

Anyway, this might shed light on my reaction to both the song and film. The timing couldn’t have been worse.

Excellent film, although only Noddy and Jim display any acting talent.

!!!!!! I had no idea. Damn. I do often wonder if Ray shouldn't have been advised to put The Kinks on ice in 1984 and explore film making and acting more extensively. The group could then have reformed at a more strategically advantageous moment in the 90s or 00s post Britpop and indie rock re-appraisals.

Scorsese also claimed Magical Mystery Tour was a good movie, I think he's just a groupie, to be honest.

    I absolutely agree with this...

I seem to remember someone saying Ray and Dave were checking out some film/video of something recently.... we can only hope...

Disc one - all their music videos fully restored, mixed in marvelous 5.1

Disc two - the full concerts filmed during the making of Everybody's In Showbiz.
    Plus doco

Disc three - a newly found film of the Preservation tour, shot in 35 mm and recorded on 16 track, fully restored and mixed in marvelous 5.1

Disc four - a fully restored concert shot in 1984 etc etc

Disc 5 - the ultimate Kinks doco featuring in depth talks with all living band members....

    .... yes, I know, I can dream on .....

    Understandable....

Sadly I am not sure I have ever met someone who hasn't been exposed to some form of sexual abuse... of those who have been open enough to speak with me about it....

..... somewhat awkward I guess, but seemingly on topic ...
When I was 12 a bloke in my Ju Jitsu class invited me over for a drink, obviously not alcohol, just that friendly "hey, wanna come over for a drink?" I was pretty naive i guess, but i also knew i could kick his ass, honestly, not exaggerating. He was in his 30's.
I remember being offered a drink, then wondering why the f... there was porn on the tv, as i had never seen it before.... and that's about it....

I forgot all about it to be honest, and i don't really know why, maybe that was around the time rohypnol was doing the rounds, maybe it was a bunch of nothing, and i just don't remember, because it wasn't memorable... but

I was talking with a mate from school in my thirties, and he was at that Ju Jitsu School, and he got around to saying "did you hear about Ted?"
This guy Ted had diddled quite few guys from there....

It leaves you a little weirded out and confused, because you wonder, and think, and the memories just aren't there...

There's no point being bothered about it now, and I have never explored it, but there's that nagging thing in the back of your mind, that if you had known more, had been mentally older, or could even f***ing remember it properly, you could have prevented it for others afterwards...

I don't want to talk about it or explore it here either, so just take it for what it is.
But every female that has spoken with me about these kinds of things, seriously, every single f***ing one, was abused or raped at some point.... (i may come across like a turd sometimes on here, but I'm actually pretty easy going, and folks talk to me about things....)
And logically, with all we now know about the way predators managed to position themselves in ideal circumstances for decades, and still do..... I have no doubt many guys have experienced similar.... but guys can't/don't talk about it, because it's a blot on their manhood, and nobody cares about men anyway lol... I'm pretty secure in my manhood, and give less than a hairy sh't what anyone thinks about me, so it's all good....

So I sit here wondering whether to even post this.....

It seems on topic, but it also seems distracting...
Don't follow this up, I don't want this to overtake the Kinks. .... and if it shouldn't be here, someone get it gorted out of the thread...
It's just the topic keeps coming up, and it seems a relevant perspective.

According to Amazon US, the hardcover edition won’t be out until January 2023, so I just got my copy via Amazon UK. I think that you can get it via Kindle.

Speaking of Kinks and books, I did get both volumes of Peter Quaife’s novel Veritas as a birthday present. Have any Avids ever read it?

Return to Waterloo - I've listened to the songs once now and I'm interested enough to listen again - and might even sneak one or two onto my Kinks playlist if they were available to download - though I may not immerse myself enough to comment much. I am more intrigued to watch the film after reading posts here, but we'll see if I get around to it.

Mark, I know you asked for no follow up so all I'll say is we rarely know other people's life histories so it's better to err on the side of kindness and compassion.

Know you said not to follow up but one of my stories from this -- section of the inner emotional library -- is at least music-related, as well as Japan-related. Please skip without guilt but anyway, briefly --

Me & 2 of my 16/17 year old buddies from our international school saw the Police in Osaka on their Regatta de Blanc tour... after the show, an American guy walked up to us, around 30, friendly type -- the Police's tour manager. He said he could get us front row/backstage for the Police's upcoming Kyoto show, so of course we jumped up and down and went. After the show, he was like "oh, Sting and the guys really want to meet you, let's head to the hotel." Then "oh let's get wasted in my room, Sting'll be here in a bit." Then pills & booze. Then sending my buddies out to find more booze, still with the "Sting really wants to meet you guys" schtick. Then suddenly the guy's all over me -- & though extremely high this dude on top of me summoned some inner strength -- I threw him off just as my buddies came back -- then told them we needed to split. I didn't tell anyone for years, for whatever reason, I guess shame or embarrassment. I wouldn't say it traumatized me or anything but what a dick, looking back.

    It's a remarkably weird world...
All just lessons along the road.

You often get that question about "what would you change in your life if you could?" thing... and essentially the answer is nothing, because I would cease to be me... sure more money, or success, or no bad decisions would have made it easier, but it would take away a huge part of who we are as people, as individuals, with our unique perspectives.

Edit: Shame and guilt are futile emotions to me.... if someone wronged me, I have no need for them. If I wronged someone, I need to fix that... shame and guilt are useless

    I agree. It's a bad cover.

I wonder--without evidence--if the female on the cover is one of Ray's real life daughters who was in the film? Perhaps that's why she was used. Ray's way of pleasing his daughter. I'm just guessing, though.

I saw the film for the first time a few years ago. I struggled with it. It seemed longer than it's actual running time. I should revisit it, though, just to get a better handle on it.

If time isn't too tight, we'll be running in a way that will average out to about 6 minutes per day to get through the whole thing.

    Return to Waterloo

Started watching this a bit today. This is all completely new to me (except for the 3 songs we covered on WoM!).

Can it be anything else? Originally seeing this title, I figured this was an updated story of Terry and Julie, coming back to Waterloo 20 years later, and crossing over the river for old times sake. Whether they have been married for 15 years, or if they are re-connecting after going their separate ways and finding their respective soulmates at some other station, well, that would be Ray's decision.

I am not sure why else he or they would invoke Waterloo so prominently.

As we were exiting the Paul McCartney show at MetLife a couple weeks ago, they were playing No More Lonely Nights over the stadium loudspeakers. My wife asked, "What is this? Ick, sounds like Richard Marx". She meant that as an insult, but I do really like that ballad! It's got David Gilmour playing that great guitar solo outro. Not sure if she realized, but she absolutely heard that song in the car few times as it's on my 80s playlist :)

The only problem I will have with Return to Waterloo is if there a song here that I absolutely love, do I need to bookmark it on YouTube? Because I don't think it's on streaming services, and I doubt I'll ever buy the soundtrack.

OK, this is a good one! Wow. Wasn't expecting this song to come along on this album. It's handled so sensitively and with the right amount of heartbreak without it being too overwrought(even though for the subject matter, overwrought would be appropriate, eh?).

Adore the acoustic guitar. And Ray's breathy voice. And my absolute favorite part is the pause in the 2nd verse between "Have you seen this face?" and
"Dig deep in your mind." So effective at drawing in the listener.

Avid Martyj, the young woman on the cover, who played the female punk, wasn't one of Ray's daughters. Her name is Sally Ann Field.

The cover is pretty "meh". They had the punk couple predominantly on the cover, which is misleading. They should have pictures of the Traveller and/or the wanted poster and pictures of his family instead.

    Summer's Gone

Not a stand-out track for me. I feel like this is boiler plate Ray - like he could churn out something like this anytime he put his mind to it. There are some good parts to the song. I do like when he puts a little "wiggle" on "summer's goo-ooone"...sounds almost like a yodel or something country-ish. There's a bit of a twangy guitar bit towards the end, before that weird sound effect(is that someone under water?), that I like and wished there was more of that.

The keyboard is annoying in parts.

the song is just sorta THERE. OK, but I probably won't remember it tomorrow.

I've added start times to the posts for all the tracks... when we get to them.

Edit: and Ray's versions are available as songs . It should all work out.
The title track, Lonely Hearts and Expectations are great tracks... there are several other good ones too.

OK I was getting Sally Ann Field mixed up with Shirley Anne Field (who's older than Ray) and probably Sally Field. I don't know who Sally Ann Field is but she might have chosen a more distinctive and less confusing name!

I have never heard or read anyone saying anything good about Give My Regards To Broad Street. I'm a huge Macca nerd, I even rather like the album (though not so much the single, bar the Gilmour solo), but I never felt the urge to watch the film. I guess this is part of why I had such low expectations from RtW, and was so pleasantly surprised.

Also, I never managed to watch the first 2 Beatles movies in full. The only reasons why I watched MMT to the end were 1) it's really short and 2) we had bought the VHS with a friend and felt obliged to go through it.

:D I had never seen it until I asked for it for Christmas maybe 6-7 years ago. I was shocked! Lesser bands would have had their careers derailed and never recovered. :D I guess I’ll keep the dvd but only because of the music videos.
