I have not read this article yet because it's subscriber only. I recently read Kink, so I'm just wondering what his new book will offer? It seems we have heard all these stories before. @Wondergirl will have to let us know if it's worth picking up!

I should have clarified “autobiography”. We’ll see, but that first autobiography was published in 1995. He’s had a lifetime of good and bad things happen in just the time since then as has Ray. Obviously not much Kinks band related since they dissolved at this same time, but much personally for him. It’s his second autobiography of course and not a history of The Kinks per se, so we shall see.

We have a Winstanley Street 15 minutes away in Carindale.
It used to be known for hosting a yearly fair with rides called the Crackerjack Festival and adjacent is a large council bus depot.
As in Come Dancing the area has probably been "modernised" by now.

For the most part I'm going to keep posting the compilations on Saturday, as I have been, but this album seems to need a bit of a nod of recognition.
I also think it may perhaps need @Michael Streett to set us straight on what mixes were used, and if there are any alternate mixes/edits and such used here.

I have the sacd of this, and bought it when I bought most of my other Kinks sacd's... I have played it a few times, mainly when people are over.... because most folks are only really going to be interested in Kinks best of's, unfortunately.... but I think it is a pretty good compilation.

Obviously there are differences between the record and the cd here with the tracklistings being in a different order, and also that some of the song choices are different.
Long Distance, Heart Of Gold, Juke Box Music and Celluloid Heroes (Live) don't make it onto the cd...
They are substituted for Low Budget, Gallon Of Gas and Full Moon...
Personally I like all seven songs, but the swaps seem weird to me...

The Japanese pressing of the cd is different again

1 You Really Got Me (Live) 3:36
    2 Destroyer 3:48
3 (Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman 3:37
    4 Juke Box Music 3:47
    5 A Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy 5:01
    6 Come Dancing 3:57
    7 Do It Again 4:11
    8 Better Things 3:01
    9 Lola (Live) 5:39
    10 Low Budget 3:49
    11 Long Distance 5:24
    12 Heart Of Gold 4:03
    13 Don't Forget To Dance 4:40
    14 Living On A Thin Line 4:11
    15 Father Christmas 3:44
    16 Celluloid Heroes (Live) 7:25

So I guess in general there was contention about what should actually be on the album I guess.

The UK singles during this time period were
    Sleepwalker
    Juke Box Music
    Father Christmas
    Rock And Roll Fantasy
    Life Life
    Black Messiah
    Superman
    Moving Pictures
    Pressure
    Lola (live)
    Better Things - 46
    Predictable
    Come Dancing - 12
    Don't Forget To Dance - 58
    Good Day
    Do It Again

The US singles during this period
    Sleepwalker - 48
    Juke Box Music
    Father Christmas
Rock And Roll Fantasy - 30
    Live Life
    Superman - 41
    Gallon Of Gas
    Catch Me Now I'm Falling
    Lola
    You Really Got Me
    Destroyer - 10
    Better Things - 3
    Come Dancing - 6
    Don't Forget to Dance - 16
    Do It Again - 4
    Summer's Gone

These are the official singles according to kindakinks.net and the chart positions according to wiki... the US chart positions are for the Mainstream Rock Chart, except Come Dancing which is the Billboard Hot 100

Now to throw matters into further confusion, for a single novice like me

Celluloid Heroes (live) charted in the US on the billboard chart - 80 ... but I can't help wondering if it was actually the a-side Lola that charted.

You Really Got Me (live) charted in the UK at 47 ... though kindakinks.net doesn't list it as a UK single

State Of Confusion charted on the US Mainstream Rock Chart at 26 ... though it wasn't released as a single

Living On A Thin Line charted on the US Mainstream Rock Chart at 24 ... though it was only available on a 12" promo

So all of that from my perspective is really bloody confusing, and it seems no wonder that the best of the era was so seemingly confused in itself...

I reckon there should have been two albums released for the Arista years in cd form, a double and a single disc edition...
If I was putting this together on the chart figures, then

    Sleepwalker
    Rock And Roll Fantasy
    Superman
    Destroyer
    Better Things
    Come Dancing
    Don't Forget To Dance
    Do It Again
    are automatic inclusions

    and
    Celluloid Heroes
    You Really Got Me
    State Of Confusion
    Living On A Thin Line
    would seem like logical inclusions

But as we know, I'm an oddball... I don't really like live tracks on best of compilations, so if I included a live cut, it would be one track and it would be the last track, for flow reasons. Live tracks don't flow well with studio tracks in my opinion.
Personally, I wouldn't include You Really Got Me or Lola, because as songs they have already been included on tons of collections, even though these are the live versions....

So anyway, really thinking about it, my Come Dancing With The Kinks would look something like this

    my single cd

    Sleepwalker 4:04
    Juke Box Music 3:47
    Mr Big Man 3:49
    Rock And Roll Fantasy 5:01
    Misfits 4:41
    In A Foreign Land 3:03
    Superman 3:36
Catch Me Now I'm Falling 5:59
    Moving Pictures 3:47
    Destroyer 3:48
    Add It Up 3:14
    Better Things 3:01
    Come Dancing 3:57
    State Of Confusion 3:41
    Don't Forget To Dance 4:40
    Do It Again 4:11
    Good Day 4:35
Living On a Thin Line 4:16
    Celluloid Heroes (live) 7:25

my extra cd for the double cd version..
A sort of extra and unreleased tracks compile

    Father Christmas 3:44
    Artificial Light 3:27
    Prince Of The Punks 3:18
    The Poseur 2:53
    On The Outside 5:00
    Elevator Man 3:48
    Hidden Quality 3:05
    Duke 3:28
    Nuclear Love 2:40
    Stolen Away Your Heart 3:00
    Once A Thief 4:07
    Noise 4:34
    Long Distance 5:24
    Slum Kids (live '79) 6:26

I don't know, maybe that wouldn't work, but it would work for me :)

The 'Come Dancing With The Kinks' album sleeve is one of their better ones imo with the tastefully tinted photo of Ray and his partner from the Come Dancing video, though by the same token I'm not sure how well it represents this 1977-84 era has a whole, which was of course the phase of their hugely successful stadium rock US comeback. 'Come Dancing' was the big hit of course but it was kinda atypical of this essence of this period, and I think something that spoke to their hard earned recognition as a frontline rock act during this time (maybe something closer to the 'One For The Road' sleeve) and how the double LP was packed with the cream of that era might have worked better overall.

Come Dancing With The Kinks: The Best of 1977-1986 was my first Kinks on CD and it's a great intro to the band and the arena years. Like my favorite comps, it inspired me to search out the full LPs from these years and to dig further.

I've read a little about the current autobiography. He goes over stories of his bad behavior in hotel rooms (like doing something nasty in a hotel sink) while in the Kinks and other hijinks(or is it hiKinks?). I think it's a lot like Kink but with more stories from the time period that didn't make it into the first book. As long as it's entertaining (or horrifying), it should be an interesting read.

I see what you mean. I was 16 at the time, I thought only of the music.

To me, the Kinks Arista years are the perfect material for a well curated compilation that checks all the boxes : not too many hits (so they're all in), a bunch of cool singles that should've been hits (they're in), a couple of title tracks to add, two obvious fan (and band) favorites to be kulled from the album tracks (Better Things and Heart of Gold) and one stellar outtake (Long Distance) to accompany the stellar non LP single (Father Christmas) as "exclusives". It was easy to make it perfect… and they did, with superb art work to boot. The original CD (from 1986) still gets it (almost) right: you lose three songs for length reasons, I just wish they'd chosen the live ones. And then, for whatever reason, they messed with it for the 2000 CD reissues, with changes that make very little sense to me. I hold on to my 1986 CD.
I'm in Calgary right now. Saw the "Stampede" parade yesterday in the streets, led by "Marshall" Kevin Costner. It was a lot of fun. Tomorrow, off to Montana, for a long road trip on the road of great US writers, films, TV series and western sceneries, most of them old Ray Davies fantasies as well.

Will definitely still be around the thread. I wouldn't miss the Think Visual discussion for the world.

It's a movie.... the scene I'm referencing is hilarious.... it's a good movie but that scene is belly hurting funny.

Scene setter - There is competition between the bride to be's oldest friend, and newest friend.
The oldest friend organizes dinner.... and everything seems fine until....

There was a live version of You Really Got Me on the B-side of the Down All The Days 12" single (I think), which was presumably 1989/1990...is that likely to be the same version that charted at 47 previously? If so, it goes at breakneck speed and received many plays from me in the sixth form common room!

No, the version that charted at #47 in the UK in 1983 was a reissue of the original recording. I believe the version of 'You Really Got Me' that's on the DATD single was recorded in 1987 and is essentially an outtake from the originally conceived double LP version of The Road live album, which would have included more of the oldies conspicuous by their absence from the single LP version that ended up coming out.

I always thought that the cover and title of Come Dancing With the Kinks should have been the cover and title of State of Confusion. I do have it in a set that includes Celluloid Heroes The Kinks Greatest and the DVD of One From the Road. The funny thing is that the labels of the CDs are switched so that the earlier CD has the later CD label and vice versa. Also my copy of the soundtrack of Sunny Afternoon, the jukebox musical, has a label that says that it's a sampler, but it plays the whole album.

Speaking of the Sunny Afternoon soundtrack, how about adding it for discussion here? I know that's it not the Kinks, but it's all Kinks songs & I think it would be interesting.

Avid Fourtleo, have a great 'n safe time out there in the US West and please keep us informed of your adventures.

The 1986 original release of this Arista comp was notable then for a couple of reasons. It picked up the “greatest” hits in various single edits and/or mixes along side some album cuts. The original CD release here was a truncated version of the 2 LP set omitting a few tracks due to time constraints. The Japanese listing above is that original 1986 CD track list.

It was notable as the first LP and CD release of “Long Distance” previously only available on the State Of Confusion cassette. As for the single versions it picked up, the ones of note are the single edit of “Juke Box Music” with the channels reversed for some reason (same mix though),the longer single version of “Better Things” (also same mix), and most notably the US single mix (which is different from the album mix) of “Don’t Forget To Dance” (but no fade here - the 7” had a slight fade).

The 2000/2004 Velvel CD/SACD reissue/remaster has a different track list as noted above and took all of the recent 1998/1999 remastered versions of all tracks/mixes so a little different in that regard as well. Nothing unique on the Velvel versions if you have the Velvel remasters of the individual albums.

So just like the earlier RCA comp Celluloid Heroes , Velvel (and/or Ray) did not replicate the original releases of these two comp reissues in terms of track list or mixes making them totally redundant if you have all the 1998/1999 remasters. What was unique on the original releases remains unique to those releases.

Great song. It took the place of Rock n' Roll Cities on my modified Think Visual album. I think it fits alright, the album being quite diverse anyway.
