The lead singer wasn't the best singer in the band

  1. Spock's Beard. Neal Morse is an okay singer but when he left the band I thought drummer Nick D'Virgilio turned out to be a better singer than Morse was.

It’s cumbersome but I think Michael Nesmith was the best singer in the MONKEES even though Jones and Dolenz were considered the main singers.

Thanks...that makes sense. That version with Glen Hughes above is pretty harsh.

Definitely agree that Mick Jones is better singer than Joe Strummer

I agree Clark was the better singer...but the tone of Roger's voice was more, let's say, "Byrds-defining".

Yeah I never knew that for years, cause it's so "golden era" and I wasn't up on them.

Paul Heaton sang lead on Song For Whoever. Dave Hemingway named the girls on the chorus though so that may be the part you’re thinking of.

I almost listed them because Orr is obviously a better singer but I feel like he's contributed enough lead vocals to be considered a primary lead singer in the band.

I like Lamm over Cetera in CHICAGO
    Especially after Cetera went sappy.

Coverdale and Hughes both sing on the original song.

Surely Joy Division would be a prominent example, at least from a purely technical/conventional perspective?

I think some Gentle Giant fans prefer Kerry Minnear's vocals.

And, of course, Pink Floyd during certain periods, though it was really more of a "co-lead" situation most of the time. But from 1977-1981, most of the vocals were Roger.

I think one of the singers in this has to be better than the lead, not that he doesn't have personality. I mean theoretically they were all singers.

I agree. But from what I'm seeing here, the most notable voices aren't the ones that are technically better. So in truth, who's to say who is actually the "better" singer..is it the one with a stronger, better range or the one who "delivers" the song more effectively...

IMO, he wasn't as upfront as Ric...I always thought of him as the lead guy.

DP did some Gillan era songs with Coverdale, but did they ever do any Coverdale era tunes with Gillan once he returned?

Ian Curtis was the PERFECT singer for Joy Division. The last thing JD needed was a purely technical/conventional singer. I get your point, but disagree that anyone else in that band was a better singer for THAT band.

I can’t freaking stand The Foo Fighters, but in the Nirvana days and very early Foo Fighters, Dave had a more technically pleasing voice.

I agree, but not on the last tour. Onstage charisma and lyric writing also dictated the lead vocal split.

When Bono has an off night, Edge has a better voice.

Also although their voices are different they aren’t so different that I bet a lot of casual fans that only know their radio hits don’t even realize Ric wasn’t always the lead singer.

Just got back from Wiki and the answer was NO. He refused. Burn was played in 91 with a different singer though.
