Apparently there is an earlier version of the song, recorded in 1925 as "Frank Du Pree" by Blind Andy Jenkins. I have not heard that song so I can't say if it's the same song or just a variation on the theme.

Thanks; I don't remember hearing the song before, but I've found a version recorded by Vernon Dalhart - he recorded the song twice; first for Columbia in 1925 (song credited to Rev. Andrew Jenkins); and secondly for Edison in 1926 (the version on YT)

'Love is Strange' - Bo Diddley - first recording of the song (a few months prior to Mickey & Sylvia) with Jody Williams playing lead guitar; same session as 'Who Do You Love' on 24th May, 1956; but remained unreleased until 2007

based on a riff Jody Williams had previously played on 'Billy's Blues pts. 1&2' by Billy Stewart; recorded March, 1956

'She didn't forget her shoes (Johnny and Louise)' - Felix Harp (1973)

later recorded in 1974 by both the (German?) Love Generation as 'Johnny and Louise (she didn't forget her shoes)'; and the (new) Settlers as 'She didn't forget her shoes'. The most successful version would be in 1975 as simply 'Shoes' by Reparata (just outside the UK Top 40, something of a "turntable hit"). Her version appears to have the same basic backing track as the Felix Harp recording.
