Apparently there is an earlier version of the song, recorded in 1925 as "Frank Du Pree" by Blind Andy Jenkins. I have not heard that song so I can't say if it's the same song or just a variation on the theme.
Thanks; I don't remember hearing the song before, but I've found a version recorded by Vernon Dalhart - he recorded the song twice; first for Columbia in 1925 (song credited to Rev. Andrew Jenkins); and secondly for Edison in 1926 (the version on YT) 78 Record: Vernon Dalhart - Frank Dupree (1925) Edison matrix 10801.
