Now playing this gorgeous album from cellist David Darling, recorded in 1981. Featuring Jan Garbarek, Collin Walcott, Steve Kuhn and Arild Andersen
These are indeed some very sweet favs. The first one I just spun last night. David Torn - Cloud About Mercury (1987) ECM 1322 - recorded March 1986 at Audio International, London
Great album indeed, and an all star lineup, you normally wouldn't expect to hear prog-rock mainstays Bruford and Levin on an ECM record.
I picked up a U.S. pressing of a Miroslav Vitous title First Meeting with the late Kenny Kirkland on keyboards. It's very good in that classic ECM kind of sound in 1980.
Now playing this moody gem from 1989. Reminds me a lot of Jon Hassell, especially on the 17 minute title track.
I finally found a CD copy of this 1978 recording. One of my ECM grails for sure, featuring Terje Rypdal on guitar and organ... this is one sinister album!
Great album. I got to see this line up once in downtown Los Angeles of all places in a museum with about maybe 150 people. Was a great show.
Now playing this hypnotic 3CD set from Azimuth...... The title track from the debut album is 12 minutes of minimalist, otherworldly beauty:
John Abercrombie, Arcade (1978 | from The First Quartet, ECM 2478-80, 2015) I waited for years for the three late 70's/early 80's Abercrombie Quartet albums to be released on CD, and when they finally did, I almost didn't notice! Now, collected together in this fantastic 3CD set, they now rightfully belong to my most prized ECM possessions.
I too discovered ECM in the early 70's buying them for $2 used at Moby Disc. I was drawn to them by those beautiful album covers. I was surprised by the hate for the "ECM sound" by many on different threads here. In a time when there was so much "noise" that ECM sound brought me peace. More adventurous and weirder than the later appearing Windham Hill. I ended up falling in love with anything that had Eberhard Weber on it. Lucky for us there is room in this world for everything from Howlin' Wolf to Jan Garbarek. Always had a weak spot for this relatively early Jan Garbarek
Arild Andersen Quartet - Green Shading Into Blue (1978) ECM 1-1127 - recorded April 1978 at Talent Studio, Oslo
