    There are also plenty others I've seen multiple times, loved, but my current feeling is "thanks, I'm good."

    The Godfather. I see new things in it every time I watch. Every scene, every shot, there's something to examine and relate to the rest of the film.

    For example, it took me years to notice how, in the opening wedding section, we are given evidence upon evidence of how everyone is wanting to get in to see the Don (to ask a favor, or just thank him for inviting them, i.e. Luca Brasi showing respect.) But his son Michael? It's the opposite. He, by contrast, keeps his father waiting. He is told, while he is sitting talking to Kay, that his father was asking for him. And Michael doesn't even shift in his chair. He just stays right where he is. He is his own man - he keeps the Godfather waiting. It's small details like that that brilliantly foreshadow Michael coming to power himself. Again, it took me many viewings to see this, the whole sequence is set up to show how much everyone respects the Don and kisses his ring etc., fears his power or craves his help, but Michael is the only one free of that kind of servile behavior, right from his first appearance on screen.

    Like comfort foods, there's just some movies I turn to for a variety of different reasons - maybe it's a particular holiday or due to my mood, or even the weather (the annual viewing of Jaws to start of summer, a wine-drenched Godfather marathon during a snowstorm).

    My go-to picks are (in no order);
    Rocky - My wife gets me. Sensing I've had a rough day, she'll ask "Do you need some Rocky?"
    Planes, Trains, and Automobiles - Tradition must be observed. Just as my Halloween would be incomplete without Young Frankenstein, Thanksgiving wouldn't be the same without this John Hughes classic.
    The Godfather Trilogy - It's all about power. And if mine stays on during a winter Nor'easter, this is what we're watching. Like wine, the first two movies just get better with age. The Third? Not up to the same high standard, but still worthwhile viewing.
    On Her Majesty's Secret Service - "Coming up next - the James Bond 007 Holiday Spectacular on Ice! Featuring George Lazenby and his special guests Telly Savalas and Diana Rigg. Special musical guest Louis Armstrong."
    King Kong Escapes - The cinematic equivalent of a grilled cheese sandwich. Over think it - adding higher quality cheeses or artisanal breads - and the charm is lost, as the sandwich I loved as a kid becomes something else entirely. So no, I don't think about how this movie fits into the King Kong canon or why only a robot Kong could dig up Element X. If I do, King Kong Escapes won't be the movie I loved as a kid.
    Goldfinger - Peak Sean Connery. Peak James Bond.
    Duck Soup - Rufus T. Firefly. Make Freedonia Great Again.
    Jaws - I honor the man and crush the can. Several times over.
    North By Northwest - "I have two ex-wives and several bartenders dependent upon me." Hitchcock's bottled some fine wines...but this is champagne. It's light, fizzy, and total fun.
    The Bride of Frankenstein - Who makes a movie like this in 1935? I love its gleeful audacity, open blasphemy, and general air of anarchy and heresy. Oh - and necrophilia, just for good measure. It says everything about the movie's tone that the least over-the-top element within it - is the Monster!
    Godzilla, King of the Monsters - I love nearly any movie with some species of dinosaur in it - but none were as cool or as monstrous as the original Godzilla. That he's completely unsympathetic is part of Godzilla's charm - he's not chasing any blondes or stuck in Tokyo against his will. No, Godzilla's just coming to take mankind down a few pegs and Raymond Burr's around to provide color commentary for those of you at home.
