How China Is Rewriting Its Own Script

"China wields enormous influence over how it is depicted in the movies Americans make and watch. It’s part of a broader push by the government to take control of its global narrative and present a friendlier, less menacing image of China to the world.

Hollywood studios are also eager to grab a slice of China’s fast-growing box office market, which surpassed the United States’ in total revenue for the first time ever in the first quarter of 2018..."

Personally, I've always wanted to see Jason Voorhees stalk a bunch of lascivious (but patriotic!) Chinese teens across the Great Wall. :)

Economic power buys lots of things? How movies about _____ subject play out in ______ country? You can fill in the blanks. For example since you are from Australia, how well did the last movie about the Bataan Death March play out in Japan? A film can get made but no one will see it if it can't get distributed, Chinese or no Chinese.

It's a huge market now. They have been 'token' casting Chinese actors in major Hollywood films for a while now in the hope it will be big in China.

What is more interesting is that they don't allow certain type of films that deal with 'advocating cults or superstitions' , so the recent Ghostbusters was banned and some other pretty harmless films that have these elements.

I think it means you won't see Chinese villains in Bond/Clancy/Bourne style thrillers.
