Great thread. Kudos! Despite being a charter, massive fan of the Pink Floyd, I've never heard the "Wish You Were Here" take with Stéphane Grappelli. What a historic moment, and breathtaking musical frisson (although, sadly, the Floyd deemed it inappropriate for what they were trying to do with the album. Not 'absent' enough ...?)
Listening to Piper the other day a rather obvious fact occurred to me, Dave and Sid shared a timbral quality in their singing voice. Their voices aren't that far apart. Also as dreamy as Syd was Dave was just as dreamy. There's only the question of the guitar playing and we know how that question will play out here. Also just bought a pristine first UK WYWH with the black outer and sticker! Never thought I'd get one without paying a fortune. It could be considered a small fortune mind you.
Me too. This little pedal will get you pretty damn close to that iconic sound for $239. Worth it imho.
I almost pulled the trigger on this recently but went with the Strymon El Capistan which is like a combo of various tape echos like the Echorec, Echoplex and Space Echo but not specific to each unit. I'm sure I would have been happy with the Catalinbread had I chose that.
Yeah that looks killer. A tad pricey. I previously had a Flashback 2 which had good sounds but it was a pain in that it had limited controls that could only be tweaked by software.
Someone should have told that guy about shampoo and to sort his split ends out..... Oh, forgot - Nick Kent did that and I don’t think David ever forgave him.
Right at the very end of the album as everything’s fading away, Rick plays the melody line of “Emily tries, but misunderstands”. The last note is then raised, to my my mind taking it to a higher place. Give it a try, let me know what you think.
I first saw the film Crystal Voyager in a late night screening at the cinema. If you haven't seen it, the first part of the film is a documentary of surfer George Greenough. The second half is the album version of Echoes set to amazing surf footage. Well worth getting hold of if you haven't seen it:
New interview with Guy Pratt: Interview with Guy Pratt – talking Floyd, Saucers, Marr, Bowie, musical influences & more He mentions working on a new book and also a new podcast with Gary Kemp, interviewing Nick Mason, amongst others. Describes the Saucerful of Secrets band with Nick Mason as being the ‘sun-dried tomatoes of rock ‘n’ roll.
The last note could be just replicating that background vocals part 'aah ooh' in the verse(s) of 'See Emily Play'.
Whoa. While all music tastes are certainly subjective, history has proven that this may very well be the most "wrong" album review of all time. Well done!
I think in an interview years later David said he/they regretted not using the Grappelli take for the album.
