    Harry Powers - Wikipedia

Harry F. Powers (born Harm Drenth; November 17, 1893 – March 18, 1932) was a Dutch-born American serial killer who was hanged in Moundsville, West Virginia.

Powers lured his victims through "Lonely Hearts" ads, claiming he was looking for love, but ultimately murdering them for their money. Davis Grubb's 1953 novel The Night of the Hunter and its 1955 film adaptation were based on these crimes.

The character of Lieutenant Colonel Kirby Yorke, played by John Wayne in 1950's Rio Grande, was inspired by Colonel Ranald Mackenzie who led a real life punitive raid into Mexico against Comanche Indians.

The 1966 television movie “Dragnet” (which wasn’t shown until 1969) the serial killer of models Don Negler was based on 1950s serial killer Harvey Glatman. In the movie, Friday and Gannon finally trace a candy bar wrapping and receipt to the store to his trailer park and a police chase of his vehicle. In real life one of
Glatman’s intended victims was able to break free, grab a gun and hold Glatman at bay while she called the police.

The movie Up Close and Personal, which starred Robert Redford and Michelle Pfeiffer, was inspired by real-life news anchorwoman Jessica Savitch.

It started as a biopic, but by the time the film hit the screen, the story bore so little resemblance to real life that Roger Ebert wrote, "Up Close and Personal is so different from the facts of Savitch's life that if [screenwriters Joan] Didion and [Gregory] Dunne still have their first draft, they probably could sell it as a completely different movie."

According to an article in the March 8, 1996 issue of Entertainment Weekly:

"IT WAS THE PERFECT PITCH. It had sex, drugs, violence, a meteoric rise, and a sudden fall—everything a movie executive could possibly want. Best of all, every word of it was true. But as Jeffrey Katezenberg sat in a Disney suite in early 1989 listening to the story of Jessica Savitch’s tragic life—how she climbed to the top of the TV news business, becoming one of the most successful women of her time, only to be undone by her own inner demons—one question formed in the studio chief’s head: “Does she really have to die in the end?”

And once that question was answered "No," it was no longer Savitch's story.

The mostly poorly-reviewed movie did have the Diane Warren-composed song "Because You Loved Me," a big hit for Celine Dion that also was nominated for an Academy Award:

In an early season DVD commentary track, one of the Simpsons show-runners (can't recall who) noted various intentional parallels between Montgomery C. Burns and Charles Foster Kane. Therefore, by the transitive property, Monty Burns is based on William Randolph Hearst. Right?.....
