Goats Head is not that bad, as many here have noted....

All the of the albums have their moments of brilliance. Some (Sticky Fingers, Exile, and in my opinion GHS) have more consistent moments of brilliance but a solid body of work in this decade :righton:

I have just picked up the SHM SACD of It's Only Rock N Roll. Seems very differently mastered to the 1994 virgin. A lack of bass and mid range maybe

' Luxury ' is a terrific track- seldom mentioned , rarely heard.

Despite the inclusion of several great songs this album has no flow to it.

The 70s are easily my favorite decade for the Stones (and music in general).
The sucking collection, well, sucks, but I always thought it was just a contractual obligation album.
If you move the goalposts from '68 to '78, the run is even better. Maybe the best ever.

I agree and I prefer this flow better on the Time Waits For No One Anthology. Some of the tracks on this one also appear on Made In The Shade and Sucking In The Seventies but I like how it goes back and picks up missed earlier tracks like All Down The Line, Star Star and Time Waits For No One in addition to including Hand Of Fate and Crazy Mama.

    Side one
    1. "Time Waits for No One" – 6:39
    2. "Bitch" – 3:37
    3. "All Down the Line" – 3:48
    4. "Dancing with Mr. D" – 4:52
    5. "Angie" – 4:33
      • From Goats Head Soup
    Side two
    1. "Star Star" – 4:26
      • From Goats Head Soup
    2. "If You Can't Rock Me"/"Get Off Of My Cloud" – 4:56
    3. "Hand of Fate" – 4:28
    4. "Crazy Mama" – 4:34
      • From Black and Blue
    5. "Fool to Cry" – 5:04
      • From Black and Blue

Black & Blue and Some Girls are a couple of my favorite Stones recordings.

It's a rather short and curly question.

It would be nice if there was an anthology of the 70s using songs not released as singles and some of the bonus tracks. Make sure it has the speed-corrected "Fingerprint File". And "Claudine". I'd buy that.

I never understood why they didn't release a 2 cd compilation of the material from Sticky Fingers through Tattoo You.

You don’t think IORR is sort of like the Stones we’re kind of spent, uninspired, getting older and lost our edge AOR album ?

I think It's Only Rock N Roll is the culmination of a band on fire, just before the implosion.

I know I'm in the minority but I find Exile haphazard and sloppy. Sure, you have moments of sheer brilliance but ultimately the stumbles (I'm looking at you Shake Your Hips) drag it down.

Goats Head Soup is a great course correction restoring some order and professionalism. Winter is one of their finest ballads.

IORR finds a band at their peak; a lean mean fighting machine with both Micks firing on all cylinders (even if one was about to burn out) and the Gimmer Twins coming into their own as a production powerhouse.
From the stomp of If You Can't Rock Me to the snarling anger of Fingerprint File it's their masterpiece (well, one of several.)

And what kind of a song is that for the Stones anyway? Very sub-standard , one of their worst 70s efforts. Definitely Sucking in the 70's.

Regarding 70's Stones, I love the Sticky Fingers/Exile On Main St./Goats Head Soup trifecta. I'm not very interested in what came after.

I'd even prefer a 3 CD set of this ! That would rival or , dare I say it , surpass ' Hot Rocks ' as the finest compilation.

Shake Your Hips is awesome to me. Those tracks give Exile the flavor which is why it’s so brilliant!!! Shake Your Hips is another slice of Americana!!
