Nice find Doc! Crazy on the cover, nothing like cheaping out. I've been looking for an all Howie cut, think I enjoy his side one over Ludwig's side two
It is! An oddity. Not sure why/when they both cut this. Flimsy cover as well, reminds of some of those old UK 12 inch singles.
Last I played it I found it a bit muffled and dry in the stereo imaging. Although that is the RL sound I suppose.
I had a Canadian red vinyl Hemispheres in my Discogs wantlist for awhile and finally pulled the trigger when I found a nice copy with the poster. I have never seen a copy of this record, US, UK, whatever, with the poster. Wow it sounds really good! I'm bad at comparisons but upon first spin it's up there with the UK. It's really nice quiet vinyl which is good for side 2. Ged's bass is very well represented on side 1. You can hear lots of nuance and bass guitar tone. Of course I would probably say the same thing about the UK. The matrix code looks like it's a normal Canadian pressing with the 1014 catalog # scratched out and 1015 added, most likely just signifying the red platter.
Nice! I've had one copy of MP since I got into vinyl 15 years ago and checked the deadwax recently to find its the Masterdisk RL cut. Very lovely surprise. I like it more than the recent reissue - even before I knew it was the RL cut - though the sound is pretty close.
Just pulled mine out. (moving pictures) Funny, I think the inner is thicker than the outer Looks like there is an all Howie cut. Since this was digital I wonder if any difference would even be apparent between who cut it.
Wait, MP is digital? As in digitally mastered or digitally recorded? I've always adored the sound of MP so this actually makes me slightly happy because I feel like I have a bias towards analog.
Mixed to digital is my take on what the credits state- (Digital Mastering)=Peter Jensen Ludwig is given credit for the mastering The 24/192 has a cut-off at about 22 (44) talk about up-sampling My own transfer shows about the same. Excellent sounding record, either way.
Wow, didn't know anyone was doing digital recording in 1980. Thought that didn't really start until the mid-80's. Guess that puts Rush at the vanguard? Nice to know a 16/44.1k digitally recorded album can sound so analog. Makes me feel better about recording my music and my clients' material digitally.
My latest acquisition (cover) is paper thin strange.....it almost feels like it's going to come apart in my hands. It must of been handled to the point of "breaking down". I will probably find another cover for it...….geez, this one didn't even make it to 30 years of age.
I have a few copies of the RL Moving Pictures (I think 4 copies actually, if including an HW/RL hybrid) On my system the RL is super clear and dynamic, with pinpoint imaging and instrumental separation. The leading edge bass transients are super sharp but with a well rounded bass tone. It doesn't get much better to my ears.
Another one of those bands that seem extinct in my area. That's the only Moving Pictures I've come across in 10 years or so. Weird.
I don't come across them much anymore either.....I was pleasantly surprised to find a double Ludwig for $8.
