I seem to remember the Pollyanna crowd going after Robert Downey JR when he said 'never go full retard' in Tropic Thunder.

I think it's telling that most of the outrage about the outrage is the perception that political correctness is unfairly limiting the various ways people can insult each other. :shh:

I own most of them on DVD...so enjoyable to get a peak in a world gone by and replaced with sick madness...it's like it was never there...

That's right and he was the dude playin' a dude disguised as another dude. If they'll go after him, they'll go after anyone.

no they are not...it has escalated to one losing their position or ownership of their business for a WORD...really? sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me...that's been around for over a hundred YEARS ...does not apply in this world...

Right? “Waaaaah! I can’t use millions of people’s real developmental disability as a pejorative to insult someone’s intelligence. Waaaah! I can’t use racial, homophobic or transphobic slurs anymore! Waaah!”

    Talk about snowflakes.

“Political correctness” is shorthand for “trying to be a decent human being; treating others in a dignified manner.”

I really did not appreciate it when he made some cheap shot about my painful debilitating chronic illness. Dipstick !

    Nothing PC about it.

It's about free speech, people make big movies and suddenly they think they are the one truth on events like world hunger, environmental issues and so on. No they are not.
But they have the right to free speech and do so, and so does Gervais have the right to criticize them.

I'm a fan of Gervais, and I love most all of his work in some measure. That said, I don't find his Golden Globes schtick that appealing - because it's just not his best material. He's far funnier elsewhere. Beyond his co-writing 'The Office', in America it feels as though his fame is due to his perceived 'offensive' comedy, which everywhere else in the world is just...comedy. He's almost become caught up in a loop of his own making, as his comedic observations in his stand-up shows now often turn upon his reaction to how others reacted to what he previously said.

This is the Ricky Gervais I like the best (outside of the old XFM shows): clever, funny and engaging, where his observations feel genuinely considered rather than concocted for easy offence. (Note: language is NSFW.)

I didn’t know who Ricky was until the Golden Globes. Is The Office the best place to start?
