I really like the chorus in this when he pushes his vocal register but its a fairly dull and plodding verse to get there. 2.5/5.
Something odd about scouring an artists entire recorded output in search of weak spots. This is the worst the critics can come up with? It’s fine, better than average. 3/5.
Noise .. I’ve got this somewhere on a cd or dvd single .. nothing registers tbh so it can’t be that good can it ? 2/5
"Noise Is The Best Revenge" I barely got past the first minute, but somehow endured until the end. I can't say it's one that I would ever want to seek out to hear again. At best it's uninspired and dreary. 1.5/5.
Noise Is The Best Revenge I find his voice a little strained in the chorus, but the verses are okay. Decent enough bridge and tune. Is this the Janice Long session version...? Remember not being too excited when I bought the Redondo Beach single. Iconic sleeve, mind... 2/5
Well it's no Every Day is Like Sunday or anything but I see nothing about Noise is the Best Revenge that would bump it out of a long list of 3/5 songs by Morrissey
Today’s song is Redondo Beach: It says a lot about Morrissey’s popularity at this point that he could almost score a top ten hit with his release of this and the live version of There is a Light. I think it was a decent choice of cover as Morrissey’s superior vocal alone differentiates it from Patti Smith’s original. Musically it is also smoother, tighter and yet safer in this arrangement. It was also recorded for a Janice Long BBC session and deserved an official release in that form. Listening to it again now, the quality of Moz’s singing pushes it up to 3.5/5.
I'm not that keen on the live version of this (I'm averse to most live tracks to be fair) but I think the superior Janice Long session version is excellent. I was never quite sure why it wasn't used as a b-side. It was certainly nice to hear Morrissey sing something with a reggae influence too. 3/5
Redondo Beach... An interesting cover, shows how much Patti Smith influenced Mozza as those morbid death obsessed lyrics are very Morrissey... 3/5
Noise is the Best Revenge - Hadnt heard it before, but its certainly not his worst ever song. I give it a 3. Redondo - I just dont like the little reggae ska thing in the verse, it doesnt work for me. The chorus is nice. Not familiar with the original. 2 of 5.
The Janice Long version is a solid 3.5/5 Live At Earls Court? Even though I was at this gig, no, its not very good. Especially not as a single. 2/5
"Redondo Beach" Not familiar with the original. A good vocal for a live track. Nothing particularly wrong with it, but not a track I would seek out. 2.5/5.
Nice cover of the original. Moz gives it some class that dear Patti Smith in all of her glorious scuzziness of the period had hid. Rounded up to 4/5.
Redondo Beach Was a little surprised when I first heard this as I love the original and this is a pleasant, decent cover. Not a fan of live recordings as a rule but I like this. Better than Satellite of Love, anyway. As has been said, the vocals are the prominent reason for its charm. 3.5/5
I'm not typically a Patti Smith fan and really not a reggae fan, but throw Moz in the mix and it's not bad. 3/5
Today we will discuss the album Live at Earls Court: This must be a contender for Morrissey’s best live recording yet. Many of the song selections are the same as those included on the Manchester DVD but, as the new album was by now a huge hit, there is a lot more energy from the crowd. And the older songs performed were all hit singles which is pretty unusual for Morrissey. This is almost the kind of set list that a normal person would play! 4/5.
