Not that it doesn't belong here but there is an existing thread on the music forum.

You saw it on yesterday's Sundance Film Festival stream?

It should be noted that, when he was producing their first album (when they were called Halfnelson) Todd Rundgren advised the male brothers to be as outrageous as they could.

This film will be getting a major release. I've seen the posters for it in several AMC theaters in Kansas City:

Seems that it is booking everywhere. I thought I would have to venture into NYC to see. it but tickets have gone on sale for my local theater in White Plains. Will this lead to a Sparks resurgence.

  9. Or rather, will it finally break them in North America?

Am definitely interested to see this - Sparks is a band I’ve known about since I was a preadolescent Trouser Press reader and I’m broadly familiar with their story, but I’ve only heard about two of their songs.

Sparks are not getting broken. Very few people will see this in theatres.

I saw this today. It’s pretty much a by-the-numbers, chronological telling of the Sparks journey. One HUGE advantage the documentary has is that it seems most of the principal people involved with them over the years were ready, willing and able to speak about Sparks on camera.

Tons of great concert and TV appearance footage. The most surprising aspect of the movie might be its 2:20 length.

Anyway, it’s a lot of fun if you like (or are predisposed to like) them. It’s a pretty fawning portrait, but it’s hard not to smile a lot during it.

Vickie and I will be seeing it this weekend. Neither of us are big fans of the band, but love documentaries and Edgar Wright films, so we'll learn about Sparks.

Yeah I may have to check this out. Not a fan at all but there has been much worse music.

Well its true that I am not a fan but Im not saying I despise them or anything. I just haven’t connected with their music. They are obviously doing something right after all these years.

Agree, I saw it Tuesday night (Australia) and found it a great watch.

Do I need Flea or Beck telling me how great Sparks are - no - but having Sparks highly engaged and involved is fabulous, and incorporating recent concert footage panned out the various aspects of the band nicely.

Heaps of great but really dusty looking alternate photos from shoots, and some comments from actual non-celebrity long term fans were welcome additions.

It's one of half a dozen Sparks songs that I know, along with Cool Places & Eaten By The Monster of Love.

Are there any interviews with former band members?

A couple - Ian Hampton from the 70s, Leslie Bohem and David Kendrick who played bass and drums respectively in Bates Motel (back-up guys from 80-86ish), Tammy Glover who drummed in the naughties gets two lines in and Evan Weiss, current guitarist might have gotten a line in, or it may have been one of the other current members (they’re sitting in a row yucking it up before or after a festival gig).

It’s presented as 1 liners stuff spread across the film, not presented as lengthy Q&As.

Christi Haydon and Jane Wiedlin get longer screen time, Christi in a very touching way.

Georgio Moroder sticks his face in quickly.

Producer Todd Rundgren gets a good bit of time, so to does Muff Winwood.

Todd's advice when producing their first album was to always be as outrageous as possible.

Which they apparently took to heart.
