I did a needle drop of this a while back, after I moved from the Ortofon 2M Black to an Audio-Technica VM760SLC cart. Here's what the cannon sections sound like on my system: Telarc 1812 QRP Vinyl Pressing Cannons (excerpt 1) Telarc 1812 QRP Vinyl Pressing Cannons (excerpt 2)
It sounds like the first excerpt is much cleaner! Agree? Also, I have been browsing the Telarc standard version of this at much lower cost ($25). The German pressing with A 11 in the run-out. I've gathered this one(A 11) is the full dynamic range and there was second version released under the same catalog number mastered with a 6db attenuation. This is the one I'd like to get.
The first excerpt is cleaner, because the cannons aren't nearly as loud...they don't really go to town with the cannons until the very end of the piece, which is the second excerpt.
Serious question here. What is a safe volume level using a 1 to 10 scale to listen to the cd without destroying speakers?
I feel that will depend on your system and your speakers. Start low and work your way up. The process may be determined by how many times you can listen to the 1812 in one session. I'm lucky if I want to hear it once every three years. Certainly not twice in one day. The Telarc novelty wore off for me many years ago, I'm afraid....
I played the cassette loud as balls after the election was called on November 9, 2020, and it shifted my woofer magnet.
Here we go ...have a look at Robert Woods (producer of Telarc's 1812 Overture) talking about the canons and tghe recording of these on you tube.. Here is the link Enjoy.. Sorry to disappoint ....This is not the same video I had seen Bob Woods talk about the actual recording of the firing of the canons....will hunt around some more to locate and post...
