Or to put it another way, a bunch of "grates," no? I remember what you'd said about "King Tut" ("mirth-free rubbish"), for example.

That was the consensus in Rich Cohen's book The Sun And The Moon And The Rolling Stones. He also opined that 1981's Tattoo You was the last "real" Stones album.

"I Feel Love" is certainly one of the most influential songs of the decade. Moroder is a 70's genius and visionary up there with Kraftwerk and Bowie

If that's what 'mock rock' sounds like, I'll take it any day...
Got to agree with you on this one, the Saints were hugely underrated. The first album and the EP are rock solid - I played the EP recently and all 4 tracks are killers.

And 45 years ago this very week, I Feel Love debuted on the U.K. singles chart at #15.

Few gems in that chart including my favorite Cat Stevens song "Old School Yard" "Easy" "Evergreen" and "Telephone Line" . Things were picking up in 1977

It’s a nice mixture. Great to see Brotherhood of Man as the second highest new entry that week, like Donna, this would be a future #1. @bob60 will be thrilled.

Have to mention Olivia achieving her first top 10 hit in 6 years with Sam. She’d have an even better year in 1978.

Probably my favorite ONJ song "I Honestly Love You" for some reason wasn't a big hit in the UK while making it to #1 in the US/Canada/Australia

Yes, it got to #22 here. She even came over to promote it too!

Mind you, I never cared for the song myself.

    * Also charted or would chart in UK. ** Did not chart in UK.

However, really, looking at that '77 UK chart . . . "Bob Marley And The Wailer"? You mean there was only one left? And with Rod the ex-Mod, where's "First Cut Is The Deepest," and why is the label listed as "RWA"?

And the Little Richard entry consisted entirely of recent re-recordings that I seem to remember being marketed around the same time in the U.S. on K-Tel.

Again, even though things were picking up in the UK, there were still the "ringers" . . . I bring up this set to ask which of the worst of the worst of the UK batch could be swapped for the best (whatever they were) of the U.S. lot that failed to make the UK charts? (Not David's kid half-brother, though, with that Crystals' cover. Had that been released as a single in the UK, people there would have cited that as Exhibit A of why punk happened.) It should also be noted that in the larger Hot 100, the Ramones' "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker," on its second week, moves from #99 to #95. And as for 'Livvy', her latest U.S. single was "Making A Good Thing Better" - which was dropping from #87 to #96 after four weeks on the chart. Clearly 1978 and a certain career-changing film couldn't come soon enough for her.

Oh, and whenever I can't see any scan, I click on the broken pic link. So as a Simple Minds song title from a decade off would say . . .

But contrasting those that were on the UK and U.S. single charts at the same time . . .
    - #7 UK = #25 U.S.
    - #13 UK = #39 U.S.
    - #26 UK = #5 U.S.
    - #28 UK = #28 U.S. (what're the odds?)
    - #29 UK = #35 U.S.
    - #40 UK = #6 U.S.
    - #42 UK = (#60 U.S.)
    - #43 UK = #1 U.S.
    - #44 UK = (#56 U.S.)
    - #46 UK = #13 U.S.
(A U.S. entry that finishes at #51 and above is in parentheses.)

Nor did many Britons, if that #22 finish (vs. #1 U.S.) is of any indication, apparently.

I checked Billboard, Cash Box and Record World for any review of "My Sharona" - and came up empty-handed. It just debuted on all three charts the same week - 23 June.

Action was another fabulous, self-penned single.

@Yam Graham, @Andy Smith, or any other Sweet fans, how many variations (different endings etc.) are there of Action?

    Excellent choices!!

Three of those I've got as 12" singles, Miss You a lurid pink, Prove It a translucent green and I Feel Love in .... black!

    All absolutely brilliant.

Andy Smith .....Like a good pinch of snuff......

Dunno Tim, but I do know that when Leppard recorded it they completely dissected Sweet's original tapes. Especially the stuff that was recorded backward. They know exactly what was said :).

Fairly sure that I've got, or at least noticed three variations.

Are you going to let me know what was said?!

Have to say the job that Down 'n' Outz did on The Tubes fabulous, White Punks On Dope (another stunning 12" single) was superb:

Think a lot of dissection went into this too!

I'm sure he / she / "I prefer to be called it", would be rightly embarrassed if they re-read this pretentious bollox.

  20. I think there is nearly half a dozen.
Most have a slightly different intro and a couple have a different outro!!
On their latest album Platinum Rare II there is yet another different mix??
Interesting, I wonder how and what they recorded their songs on??
They must have been multitracked and I presume Andy Scott has them or most of them as there are multiple remix / demo versions over the years.
Def Leppard, and I'm a big fan, is a mechanical, workmanlike cover but lacks the originals spark and sheer brilliance.

I can somehow see "Miss You" in a lurid pink, but struggling with "Prove It"'s translucent green - seems very un-Television and definitley un-CBGBs! Was it a post-70s re-issue out of curiosity?

Tell me about it. One thing about vinyl records was seeing them spin. CD's, either they don't give you that option, or if you do see them you'll end up dizzy as they spin so fast.
