Time for the next retrospective decdade thread, to follow those created by forum legend @Bobby Morrow : The U.K. 80s Singles & Albums Chart General Discussion Thread. Which itself came after: The U.K. 70s Singles & Albums Chart General Discussion Thread. Same "rules" apply, as in there aren't really any. "There’s no rules or form to follow. The thread is indeed very ‘general’. Obviously I’d like people to talk about their favourite records from this period. I was an avid chart watcher, and am sure I wasn’t alone. It will be nice to discuss important records as they enjoy their chart journey. Occasionally I (and hopefully others) will post charts, reviews and info from certain years. Obviously if you seen any of the artists live or have met them, it would be great to hear about it." EG.
Yes, the Phil Collins album was still in the middle of its crazy run at #1....15 weeks in a row, I think...then returned to the top for another 3....something like that. I didn't even like it much, found it very disappointing after No Jacket. But its best song was about to released as a single in Jan 1990 My first #1 of the decade was Butterfly On A Wheel by The Mission. Their 2nd lead single in a row to top my chart. My first (new) #1 album was The Sundays' Reading Writing & Arithmetic (released 15/1/90). EG.
Have 7 of the top 10 albums. All bought at the time. I replaced the But Seriously CD with the Audio Fidelity version years later though.
I've got 19 of the top 20. That was my period of buying up just about every new release. The only one I wouldn't have bought at the time is Chris de Burgh. I got that later. EG.
Yes, I re-bought that about a year or two ago as well. 2.99 brand new. The US version had the sleeve of the bigger boxset and was called something like Selections From Storyteller... - I've got that, plus the reissued 4CD Storyteller set from 1989. EG.
Wow, that's stunning. I wasn't buying many CD singles in 1990. In fact I probably bought maybe 1 or 2 in the whole year. Lush's EP (Feb 1990) was one. It was when indie music was beginning to really cross over. House of Love, Lush, Breeders, Pixies, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets... EG.
Luckily Eric my locals did a pretty descent job with import singles. 90's was a fun time as the format was really coming into focus. (especially with US promo's of UK/Euro bands) Except with the time regulations- Part 1/Part 2 etc... ugh
Yep, Colour was the album which (temporarily) toppled But Seriously from #1. The goodwill generated by their debut was enough to get a high entry but sales were abysmal and it tailed off badly. They didn't have a hit single from it, other than the minor Xmas release "Words". Hilariously, they tried to "baggy" up their sound with a remix of Greenbank Drive which tanked. I quite liked the album but quickly realised it was a below-par effort. Probably why the label opted for a Jan 1990 release, rather than see it flop in the pre-Xmas market of 1989. EG.
I'm always amazed/shocked when I see these charts, thanks Bobby! When a good portion I never remember hearing locally in the US. Getting Away With It quite often. Erasure's You Surround Me, not once.
You Surround Me was my favourite Erasure single off Wild. They usually made the top 10, but I put that single's poor chart performance down to timing (same for singles by a-ha and The Beautiful South later in 1990). Never a good idea to out out a new single in December of any year back then. EG.
The only things that were literally spinning at that point being sort of new were Hangin Tough by the NKTOB on 45 and Affection, the rather good debut by Lisa Stansfiield that I made an effort to buy on vinyl as by this point Dr Digital was taking over my purchases as some three years before it had with anything classical. Liked But Seriously... bought the cd but not as immediate as No Jacket Required
I think Immaculate Collection managed to be 1990's biggest seller despite coming out so late in the year. It was either that, Very Best Of Elton or Phil Collins which took the crown. My chart books will tell me. The Beloved are reviewed on that page, with the remix LP Blissed Out. They released what I consider the first classic album of the 90s in Feb 1990 with Happiness. But most of it was recorded in 1989. EG.
I did get Madges Immaculate Collection on beermat (was there a record?). The Q Sound mixes didn't impress me too much as sound although I was glad of having a Comp of hers.
