Ha - interesting! I definitely knew the MatV version before the others.

I don't think I ever heard the VH version until I bought "DD" in 2007. I had a "Motown phase" around 1984 and heard MatV's then - if not earlier, as I'm pretty sure it wasn't new to me at that time.

    And I heard - and loved - the Bowie/Jagger on in 1985! :)

Diver Down- the red-headed stepchild of the Roth years. The album that wasn't suppose to be.
A place holder single, becomes an album and tour.

Theres a lot of good pieces on DD, and I think a re-sequence would have done it good.
Put the cover songs on side 1, w/BBB or another original
A full side 2 of original stuff. Toss Happy Trails.

  3. I may be 1-2 years younger, I don't know. My awareness of popular music didn't really kick in until about 1984.

I'm going to come to defense of the Bowie/Jagger cover of Dancing in the Streets.

I see it all over this forum constantly getting put down. Personally I don't feel it's a very good cover and the video is awful but the people who feel a need to bash it are overlooking a very critical point. The song and video were not done to make any sort of astounding artistic statement, but for charity. All of the proceeds went to Live Aid famine relief. In terms of that it was very successful.

The idea was to put two top brand names onto a well known song that was a certain hit. They weren't attempting to reinvent the wheel, just raise some cash.

OK, I'm done whining...LOL..but I think it's important to fully understand the context in which the song was done. I'm sure neither Bowie or Jagger felt it was their greatest artistic achievement. But that was irrelevant.

LOL, it wasn't directed at anyone in particular, just years of pent up frustration on the forum and keeping my mouth shut. This was as good an opportunity as any for me to come to its defense.

Oh, on that level I totally agree. I love Jagger and the Stones but I'm not deaf and blind...LOL

Heck, I'll defend the video. It's a quickly-done, silly romp that aspires to be nothing more.

I don't get why it inspires such hatred!

    Oh, I get why. :agree:

I just feel it needs to be put into context.

Like I mentioned earlier, I just thought it was a kick to see Bowie and Jagger together.

If they'd collaborated on a new song and it was silly, that'd have been a massive disappointment, but this was so obviously meant to be a goofy romp that I find the hatred perplexing!

    Fair enough.
As far as the Ho Yay that the video is known for, that’s very tame by Bowie standards. Hell, it’s pretty tame compared to pics of Mick and Billy Preston on stage.

I will say the video is enjoyable in a so-bad-it’s-Good kind of way (also the only way I can listen to their version. Then again, it’s not a favorite song of mine to begin with, even though I love many artist connected to it).
