I was going to pass on it. I may change my mind. If I do end up buying it, I’ll post some of my impressions
Both Tommy and Sell Out came with a "Made in Germany" sticker on the back of the shrink. Not sure of the specific plant.
...as I was just resleaving by 200g Classic, which sits beside a 1st UK, the super deluxe set and the UK deluxe 2-disc set...along with the SACD and DVD-A and a bunch of others). I realize I may have too many copies. Anyway, figure y'all the best to illuminate this, but is this half-speed remaster a =new= remaster, or simply a half-speed pressing of the disc/digital files that was the basis for this release (The Who - Tommy
playing Sell Out right now (and who'd have thought Amazon was my best bet to get these releases ASAP?) Digging the punch, not wild about the top end, but I'm playing it on something a bit lesser than my main player. The highs do feel a bit crushed, but I've always preferred the mono and the remix, not spent nearly as much time with the regular stereo press, and this could just be how it sounds! I'll try out Tommy next. Not anticipating anything beating the Classic Records pressing for my personal tastes, but this series has been mostly pretty good for consumer-level releases in comparison to the usual Who clusterflumps (in my opinion only). Only "So Sad About Us" being neary unlistenable on AQO so far? Not too shabby, really. And I utterly adore the new It's Hard, so I'm excited to see what this version of Tommy has in store!
Mine has the same number as does the one in the Studio albums box set. I guess they just picked a number and printed it on all of them rather than assign individual numbers. Funnily enough my original UK Track Records copy doesn't have a number, it's blank after the "Limited edition number" text. Not sure how common that is or how it came about.
All of the older Decca and Mca versions I've seen had no number. Just a limited edition on the libretto
I was on the fence about getting another release of Tommy but man, am I happy I did. The laminated trifold sleeve is beautiful and the records are flat, noise free, and sound amazing. I wasn’t going to get Sell Out but now I think I will. I’m really hoping they do a proper Live At Leeds with inserts too.
Thank you! I knew the sticker looked familiar from other pressings, but I couldn't remember the source.
Honestly, the EP is a nice listen. The full show is great, but I don't always feel like listening to the whole thing at once.
I assume by “EP”, you guys mean the original single LP release (which happens to be a great flowing album).
I caved and picked up a copy. Only listened to a few tracks: Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind and Christmas. No complaints about the SQ, as it’s detailed and crisp sounding. That being said, I compared the same 3 tracks to the Kevin Gray mastered version and found them to be a bit warmer and punchier sounding. Side 2 of my pressing is slightly off centered. It seems like I always get a side that is pressed off center when I purchase an LP that was pressed at Optimal.
Exactly. I was just saying EP because the guy I was quoting did. And I agree with you about the flow of the original edit.
For the folks who’ve purchased this half-speed release, what other (vinyl) pressings of Tommy have you heard?
