Quite simple - it's not supposed to be literally you and Jagger, it's humans collectively. The whole song is saying that instead of blaming the bad things that happen on some fictitious supernatural malevolent force, we should accept that bad things are caused by people and we (collectively) should take responsibility for that.

    Genius song.

This song was from the first Neil Young album I heard and more or less stopped me listening to him for about 25 years.

How foolish I was, but I've made up for it since and I now think he's a genius. I don't mind the song now, but the lyrics remain as dumb as ever.

I reproduce them in full, for the complete effect.

    "Got mashed potatoes
    Got mashed potatoes

    Ain't got no T-Bone
    Ain't got no T-Bone

Neil Young can be a master of naff lyrics (but I’m still a big fan, though).

    From Comes a Time:

Whoa, this old world keeps spinnin' round
It's a wonder tall trees ain't layin' down
    There comes a time

For some reason that line does not work for me.

Yes I think it's very surprising that the tall trees haven't been flattened by the earth's incessant rotation ;)

Doesn’t centrifugal force push things outwards? Think about being on a childrens’ roundabout.

OK, got it. So it's centrifugal force keeping the trees upright then. Obviously outweighs the flattening effect caused by the atmosphere blasting through them as the earth spins ;)

bettsaj “I'm in competition with myself and I'm losing.”

I hate to say it, but.....

"There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before times took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay"

What is that line about.... Also there's too many syllables in that line.... Typical Polly Samson dross. Don't get me wrong, I like her as a person, but this line is awful.

    Runners up:

Sade, Smooth Operator:"Coast to coast LA to Chicago." That always bothered me as Chicago is decidedly not on the coast.

Beastie Boys: "Well, everybody rapping like it's a commercial. Actin' like life is a big commercial." Self-explanatory.

Well, OK, my Mother would call it bad. I must admit he is using the proper medical terminology! I didn't think I could right the lyrics in a post, probably be censored!

I am quite aware of various interpretations , I was there & I have mine & others have theirs...

Actually "you" is a veiled reference to my generation , the '60s...

    Stupid then & stupid now...

Only appeals to the shallowest of listeners IMO

    Especially the following lines:
Let's go and see the stars
The milky way or even mars

He was probably in some airport, sitting next to a candy vending machine when he wrote that.

I "liked" this, but only because it's a good call for this thread. So far, this is the song that "wins" imho. Wow, that's bad. I really hope they didn't make any money for this mishmash of words sorta kinda composed in the English language.

The "even Mars" lyric always bothered me. It always seemed to me that Kravitz checked out on the lyric partway through.

Joni Mitchell's lyrics to Goodbye Pork Pie Hat.

    When Charlie speaks of Lester
You know someone great has gone
    The sweetest swinging music man
Had a Porkie Pig hat on...

Pork pie hats have nothing to do w Porky Pig. The rest of the lyrics aren't all that great, either.

In which case I am the shallowest of listeners.

I genuinely don't see a veiled reference to a specific generation - what makes you think that? The song covers just about the whole of human history and points out that it's people that do bad stuff.

Hopefully we can both agree that it's not a "devil worship" song. That really is the dumbest interpretation.
