Bob, that's why I said, "it appears." That doesn't necessarily mean you should give up the DCC right away at all.

    Bradley,

I hang on to those Hoffman mastered discs unless I find a second copy!

    Bob :)

I'd like to make a few comments.

First up, the liners will be fairly compact and concise. Rather than put forth a lengthy, analytical dissertation on the band, I chose to go with something that tells the basic story - while highlighting a few tidbits and tracks. There's already been tons of great, detailed material written on the Zombies (courtesy of Alec Palao, Paul Hipensteel, etc...), and it was MOST important to me that I didn't violate the primary source research that these amazing historians have done. That said, you won't find any take numbers or recording session dates here. Anyway, I think it's pretty common knowledge where that info can be found if desired. : )

In some instances, a couple of catalog number/typo corrections were made in regard to previous compilations. Also, dates used reflect the INITIAL RELEASE date of a given track - NOT the (P) sound and recording designations. That's why you'll see something like "Just Out Of Reach'" listed as 1965 here, instead of 1966. A few other anomalies are also explained in the liners.

It says for the mono "Time of the Season" "alternate mix". This means alternate opposed to the stereo mix also on the disc, right? - not an actual alternate mono mix compared to the original single mix?

Thanks Steve, I haven't had a Zombies album since the 60's. I'll certainly add this to by slowly growing SACD collection when it's released!

Guess I can give up my search for the DCC version. Thanks to Steve for encouraging the input and also to the head of the label for allowing both versions of "Time of the Season". I will be in line for this one.

Yes, thanks Steve for letting us be part of this project. Will there be a "Thanks" credit to "SH Forums Members" credit in the notes? (just kidding).

Thank you Steve and David (and anyone else involved who's perusing the boards here) for each doing your part to preserve these recordings and their history for us. Every band should be so fortunate to have you working on their catalog (hello, Beatles?).

I'm very much looking forward to this disc!

I too have 0 Zombies in my collection and I'll be happy to add this. Perhaps I missed it if it was said, dual layer means CD layer & SACD layer, yes? I'm wired for SACD but a CD layer also means great R&R for the car!

I remember hearing many a great Zombies song, mid-sixties through the mid-seventies on my Telefunken :).

I hope this disc has proper distribution. It's hard to find ANY Zombies discs available in a regular brick and mortar music retailer. It would be nice (for me) to be able to actually walk into a store and be able to buy this disc.

When Steve's Judy Garland two-fer was released I went to my local Borders and asked for it. The guy at the counter said a few came in and were bought the first week of release. Went back yesterday (Sunday) and they had about 10 more copies in. Yes, I bought one. Also had a nice conversation with the same guy about the CCR releases. As an added bonus, I found Sinatra's Capital Collectors Series disc. Anyway, It pays to talk about this stuff with the guys at the counter.

I have an import compilation done recently, Best Of The Zombies and the Canadian Castle entertainment with the count-in to "She's Not There".

My itchy remote hand is anticipating sooo much SACD stuff....

Surprisingly enough (and not to be contentious, just expressing my observations on this) I actually see tons of Zombies as most "MOR" (i.e. attempting-to-appeal-to-everyone) retailers, like Tower and Borders. It's one of the plusses of the endless-compilation problem, really; you're guarenteed to find at least SOME Zombies material--if only a cheapo compilation--at most stores, and heck, I got into them through one of those (the Featuring Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone one from Disky, that's recently been copied as something called "Rock of the '60s" or something).

    > 20. Time Of The Season (alternate mix, mono) (Rod Argent)

Gents (Ladies too!)...you're gonna love this one!!!

There are all kinds of things going on in THIS alternate mix. I think this is the mix I'm thinking of (Zombie Heaven).

    Martin (MMM),

This is NOT the single (45 version) mix at all (BETTER!!!!). It really is an ALTERNATE mix than the single (that happens to be in MONO).

Thank you Steve for listening to my "whines" about this. I think EVERYONE comes out on the winning side with your choices!

    Advance Kudos!!! :D

Since Zombies comps are not readily stocked here in Bemidji, I have ordered the DCC Zombies comp at Columbia House and have been enjoying it.

Thanks for including both versions of Time of the Season. Saw "Bunny Lake Is Missing" this weekend incidentally and noticed the woman was escaping from the mental institution to the lovely strains of Just Out of Reach.

Thanks for the clarification, Pat. I had figured Steve would have just used the standard mono mix.

Steve - a question for you. How exactly did you come up with the tracklisting for the DCC GH disc (and thus the SACD)? Personal favorites? Or were you not involved in the track selection process? I don't know much about the Zombies, and I know there are a lot of different "hits" discs out there with various tracklistings. I'm just wondering what makes a "good" hits package (besides mastering, of course)...

Song selection for this project came from many sources. I had the final say, but others got songs they wanted, plus some songs that had to be on their for political reasons, band nostalgia, etc. The usual compilation deal. It also had to match much of the old DCC disc, license wise.

I wanted the DCC disc to have that old "British Invasion" type of sound. We didn't want to use any R&B covers, we wanted mainly stereo, and we wanted to make the band happy! Complicated, but most comps are. We could have easily made it 40 songs!

Wait until you see the list price. Everyone will be happy!

The music is great. And geez, some honest to goodness mono limiter splatter as well. Sounds neat in Hi-Rez actually!

Excellent news Steve. I'm looking forward to it. Colin has an amazing voice and I've been waiting a long time to hear some new product from you. What's the availability date (and for the CCR SACD's too)?

Excellent to see those mono tracks Steve!:righton:

Thanks for including everyone in the final decision.

So I gather that this compilation will have a little different sound even on the stereo tracks as compared to the DCC or will they be identical?

Related Zombies news: Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone are coming to the State Theater in Falls Church, Virginia (near DC) in mid-September. The concert has not yet been officially announced but tickets are available. Hopefully, I'll have Steve's SACD (along with my vinyl) for them to autograph.
