I seem to remember there was a lot of talk a couple of years ago about a forthcoming box set after a stash of 700 tapes was handed over to universal but have heard nothing since. Does anyone know if this is still happening?
That is disheartening. I was really looking forward to that proposed set. I love Lizzy. Can you share any details?
It's been shelved indefinitely due to several issues which aren't really up for discussion on a public forum
I remember Scott Gorham saying they found a bunch of stuff in a storage unit. I don't know what happened with it, though. He said The Boys Are Back in Town was originally called G.I. Joe.
Yes, some of the unreleased stuff from the stash of 150 tapes that the box set was to be culled from will be appearing on reissues of Phil's solo albums. It's better than nothing I guess. See link: Previously unheard recordings of Thin Lizzy's 'Dirty Old Town' performed by Phil Lynott emerge as part of box set »
Good to hear they're deluxe-ing Phil's solo records. While they're not a patch on Lizzy's work, there's some nice songs on them. What I really hope they'll do is include some of the stuff he was working on for his never-completed third album.
The Mutt Lange/Huey Lewis demos have been in legal limbo for years. I think that's likely down to Lange's desire to claim songwriting credits on nearly everything song he touches.
That article is total nonsense, there are currently no plans for expanded re-issues of Philip Lynott's solo albums. It's pure guesswork with no direct quotes, just the usual no knowledge piece
"While a unheard version of Phil heard rocking up Ewan MacColl classic Dirty Old Town, made famous by the late Luke Kelly of The Dubliners, is being considered for the reissue of Lynott’s second solo album."
Quote from the article: "However the cover failed to make Phil’s second solo album in 1982 and is being considered for a remastered version of the same record due out this year"
The journalists source material is a two year old press release and a bit of dodgy research using Youtube, add some guesswork and you have your headline. The 'lost tapes' story is nearly six years old now!
I would love to see some updated editions of Phil's solo albums with demos and outtakes and would also love to hear some of the last songs that he was working on for his 3rd solo effort up until his untimely death. I have most of the Grand Slam material on a few boots and have heard clips from youtube of some of his last recordings such as Nineteen, Revolution and No More, but I think it'd be cool if there was some sort of posthumous release of archival material made available.
I'd love to see something like that too, but I wouldn't be surprised if Yellow Pearl is the best we get.
