I was watching a DVDR I made from VHS tape. It was an amateur live concert recording. The vhs dub had a minute of tracking errors, static and snow. Thats something you don’t see much anymore.
Not officially on DVD, but dubs from the Laserdisc versions have been surreptitiously traded for years...
This thread reminded me how frustrated I was that Cyndi Lauper's Live In Paris was never released on dvd. Then I searched for it and see that it was released on dvd, but apparently only in Brazil. I never owned a laser disc player so I only ever had this on VHS. I see that someone uploaded it to YouTube, though, in a picture quality that indicates it either came from the laser disc or the dvd. Wow. I'm bummed to discover that the full concert available on YouTube is actually missing one song from the VHS that's one of my favorites...Boy Blue. At least it's available on its own as the official music video for that song is the live version from that same show.
I still have some vhs in storage but have no idea in what condition. For all I know, it could have been flooded several times. I taped the Beatles documentary, the one with George pulling up in his McLaren and Paul getting out, saying, "nice motor."
Did "Hollywood Blvd" get a DVD release? Idk? I do, or used to pick up many odd titles on vhs for 50¢ that I never saw in DVD bins, but over years of that many did eventually get a DVD release.
Lots of great thriller/horror stuff... Mausoleum was a good one. I saw the DVD and it isn't any better. The Changeling, The Dark Half, a lot of Ammicus movies....From Beyond the Grave. Some good sci fi too, in general a lot of stuff took some serious time to make it to DVD and some never did.
The theatrical version of Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii. Neil Young - Weld Laurie Anderson - Home Of The Brave Marianne Faithfull - Blazing Away Zappa's Universe
I thought of one I had on VHS back in the 80s, "The Beatles Live!", I don't believe this has ever seen a DVD release.
Seems like this needs to be investigated further. It sounds like it is related to the mystery of why channels get reversed on remasters of CDs from what they originally were.
The original non-narrated version of Raymond Briggs’ The Bear. I mean, Judi Dench is a treasure, but this film did not need a VO. (Or to have the poop scene cut. Thanks, Disney.) Please PM me should you know a non-VHS way to see this…
I think “American Hot Wax” came out on VHS although my copy for my own personal use is a recording off HBO. Not enough interest in Jay Leno’s brief acting career or clearing musical rights for a box office bomb
Various oddball stuff: The Dave Thomas Show (network sketch comedy special with SCTV’s Dave Thomas) NBC TV-movie “Grandpa” starring Andy Griffith, John Ritter SNL with host Ron Howard (1982) “Darkroom” suspense series on ABC hosted by James Coburn (1981) I think I may have on a tape some of the (risque) aerobic videos Showtime use to use to fill time between movies, usually late at night.
Sorry to correct you but GRAMPS. What a great movie. Andy and John together. I taped that off TV too. It’s played once in a great while. Probably on Lifetime type channels.
Missing Link (1988) by David and Carol Hughes. With Peter Elliott, narrated by Michael Gambon. A shorter documentary-attempt a-la 'Quest For Fire' at faithful reconstruction of a later phase of hominid evolution. Only ever shown on Brit TV the once, then on VHS, and never DVD to my knowledge. Does this exist on any documentary DVD compilations to anyone's knowledge (or does anyone outside of the UK have an HDTV rip)?
