This is kind of weird from Classic Records...

    Yes, they may not like it, and may not want to do any more business with you, but you will get your money back if you dispute the charge.

    That's what Mike V should have done. The consumer with a credit card has all the power in this equation, the retailer none.

    And Bernie doesn't master everything, the Gold CDs for one, and maybe other things too.

    If you spent that kind of dough with me I would be very nice to you. I would be so nice I would even tell you not to buy half the records you bought (and were disappointed with I'm assuming)!

    Send me your address and I will be happy to send you a catalog. All defective 180 gram vinyl is replaced for defects here at Better Records. Anything less is bad business.

    Classic has an arrogance problem that exceeds even mine. I guess I need the money more.

    Yep. Still smarting from that one! But you're right. Everyone here should take my example and LEARN from it!!!

    quote (from Mr. Port):
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Let's all order ours from Red Trumpet and hope they're good. Hey, it's only $30 if they're not.

    My advice to you guys is this: everyone who gets a noisy, bad sounding record should return it to the person who has insulted you with it. Pay by credit card. You will get your money back. Then maybe they will produce better records. Now wouldn't that be lovely?

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    While I appreciate Mr. Port's sending business our way, I hope it's obvious that we would take a return for any noisy or otherwise defective album. In fact, on used LPs, we'll even pay return shipping if you're not satisfied with the condition. But buying an LP -- from us, from Tom, from anybody -- is inherently a gamble on sound quality, no matter who the manufacturer is. Hey, there are even people who think that Steve Hoffman has made a clunker or two in his long and storied career. (These people are obviously delusional; I include them here just to make the point.)

    This is not about who's right and who's wrong and who's insulting whom. The problem I have with that view is that it does not admit that people can and even perhaps SHOULD have different opinions, or that it's even possible that people want to buy Classic issues for (gasp) the music instead of the sound. As convenient as it would be if the world were black-and-white, it isn't.

    If you think Classic makes lousy-sounding records, you shouldn't buy them. And if you can afford an original of Miles Vol 1, and can find it, more power to you! But for now, if you want a 10-inch LP with the original artwork, the Classic is the only game in town, and we'd be happy to sell you one (for $26.99, by the way, not $30). If it's defective, we'll take it back. Those who have done business with us will tell you that we do our best to treat people fairly and kindly and without insult, even if we disagree about the sonic qualities of a particular product.

    Actually there are a few companies that will treat you like gold and yes Peter and Tom are 2 of the good ones but also in this group I'd have to include Griffco Records (Brent) as well. Even though I'm not a huge buyer (sorry Tom) I have been treated quite well by these 3 retailers. Just MHO.:D

    I have to agree with Dave that all 3 are excellent to deal with. I only recently started dealing with Tom, but I will again. And I have dealt with Red Trumpet and Griffco many times. Excellent products and service.

    quote from Mr. Port:

    One question: did either of those other two outfits tell you how bad sounding the record was before you decided to buy it? Better Records will.
    --------------------

    Given that the Miles Davis 10-inch is not even displayed on Mr. Port's Web site, I'm not sure you can purchase it there. (You may be able to; I just don't know). But in that case, "before you decided to buy it" may have a little bit of a hollow ring, and at the very least implies that you even if you can, you SHOULD not buy it for the music if the sound isn't up to standards. Somebody else's standards, by the way.

    As a matter of fact, at Red Trumpet we do answer questions about sound quality as candidly as we can, and there are even posts in this forum that say that. What we don't do is limit YOUR selections based only on OUR opinions about sound.

    There is a lot of music out there and a lot of opinion about it, and it just may be possible that there is more than one dealer who offers great service. What I can tell you is that the people in this forum, and our customers generally, think we do pretty well, and we're the only ones out there who have independent ratings to prove it. Visit www.bizrate.com and click on music -- we're the ONLY audiophile dealer who has been rated, and we fall in the top five (or top ten, depending on when you visit) for ALL music vendors on the Web.

    If ...

    1. You want to buy only what one person thinks sounds good;
    2. You care only about sound, not about music
    (God forbid you'd like to own a great performance with lousy sound);
    3. You always place orders over $50 (we'll take any order for any amount);
    4. You don't care about a current, up-to-the-minute stock listing, 24 hours a day;
    5. You don't care about placing a secure order on the Web at any time
    (especially useful when you're dealing with used vinyl, which might be gone by the time you call)

    ...then there are lots of alternatives to Red Trumpet.

    But certainly this doesn't have to be a pissing contest about the "right way" to buy music. Surely Mr. Port can do his thing without constant reminders about how lame the rest of us are because we have different ways of doing business.

    Take it easy!

    I can attest to the fact that Red Trumpet treats its customers well. I have a Japanese Pro-Use Series Abbey Road that I bought on the advice from Red Trumpet that it would smoke my MFSL- and it does! Red Trumpet has never disappointed. Then again, neither has Better Records. Different philosophies, different personalities, but you really can't go wrong either way, which is a pretty nice situation.
