Hello to everyone out there in Hoffmanland.

I hope all our members in the US had a nice Thanksgiving.
It struck me today how uniquely American this holiday is when I was awoken at 3:40 a.m. this morning due to a problem in Singapore. Just another day there. As we grow evermore globally connected, I suppose we'll all need to develope a better understanding of each other's holidays and customs. In my opinion this is a good thing. The more we know of each other, the more we understand and the more we understand the greater our respect for each other.
Ok, off the soapbox and down to business.

Last week I had this idea that I would find some really dismal chart and call it This Week's Turkey. But, as I searched the book I found few charts from November 28th and then I saw this one. Those of you who enjoy the pop singles from this period will find this to be a good collection of hits. Those of you that are too young or just not fans of the pre-fab 60's will probably say "Gobble, Gobble".

This week's charts are from November 28, 1960

    Code:

     1. Are You Lonesome Tonight..............[B]Elvis Presley[/B]

Well, not that unique, really! We had our Thanksgiving a bit earlier this month! :)

Unless you mean "American" as in North American. :)

Chart is a little early for me yet I've heard a few of these - of course! Is "Stay" the original version? I love Jackson Brown's cover....

Same here. I'll even throw in #5!

Steve, your mastering of the Elvis track makes my jaw drop! It feels like you can reach out and feel his breath!

Not a bad chart, not great, but nice.

No, Dave, I wasn't yet alive, and never heard any of these songs until the early 90s, but I still like them. I would have preferred you pick out a turkey for fun, though.

Lots of good tunes here, but #9 may well be my favorite. Hank Ballard's stuff puts the lie to the notion that this era consisted entirely of "safe" white-bread pop.

If you haven't any Ballard in your collection, pick up a copy of Rhino's Sexy Ways compilation *immediately*!

An outstanding chart! "North to Alaska" is one of my favorite Johnny Horton songs.

This chart does nothing for me except for Elvis and Ray Charles.

Yes, it is a good chart, but for the life of me I can't recall "Poetry In Motion" by Johnny Tillotson. Oh well....

Nothing terrible there - faves are Hank Ballard, Kathy Young's remake, Maurice Williams and Gary US Bonds. Maurice, BTW, made several good records, but most people don't know anything but "Stay."

They play it all the time on the "Good times. great oldies" radio...

You sure about that? It's a bona-fide classic...

    Friends,

I was 9 when the tracks on this chart were popular. I like them all with #'s 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 being my favorites. Steve's mastering on #1 belongs in his all-time Top 10 of mastering accomplishments, IMO - simply superb! I have personally re-mastered # 6 and have actually got it sounding pretty decent, in as much as it can.

Dave - thanks for posting a great chart!

    Bob:)

I think he meant beyond the huge hit, Grantie. "Stay" is well known, but Relic put out a CD of the Herald masters years ago(remastered by the fine Little Walter DeVenne, a fellow New Hampshire resident), and there was much exceptional material there. Also, remember Williams was the leader and writer of the Gladiolas, whose original version of "Little Darlin'" was upstaged by the genuinely superior, more dynamic version by Canada's the Diamonds.

    Dave,

This is a fine chart; all winners. I was 6 days old when this chart came out and I can recall, with fond memories, GOO-GOOing to all of these songs!:D

Every one of these songs is part of my collection!

  21. Grant

Grant Life is a rock, but the radio rolled me!

I'd still prefer something from later on in the 60s or the 70s! ;)

The only one I don't have and never heard was the Gary U.S. Bonds song.

  22. Ed Bishop

Ed Bishop Incredibly, I'm still here

I'm a fan of the random aspect of it, meself.... ;)

Let's see....all vinyl aside....Frank Guida(Bonds' producer)put out a CD on his own label back in the '80s(now OOP)....Rhino put out another some years later(also OOP)...and there's a Varese comp(hopefully still in print)...and you've missed "New Orleans"? Forget the Time-Life and overseas CD's on Line/Outline and who knows how many other labels...:D

Okay, I'll take your word for it! What a treat you're in for when you DO hear it!:)

Good evening, Steven. Go ahead and spoil my fun.....;)

How you doin'? A long and taxing week since that Moodies concert....I fear my days of concertgoing--solo--are over. What a gig! But Justin really does look very wan and sickly these days, though he plays great gee-tar that's never been appreciated outside Moodydom.

You know something I don't, eh? Like it was on a TV commercial? Hey, i'll look around in my various artists comps to see what I can find. Maybe I do have it and ignored it.
