Hello Friends, I'm back home after a week long vacation. It's nice to be home but getting
back to work on Monday is going to be hell.
Last night I attended a Hall & Oates concert in the Grand Cayman room at the Trump Marina
in Atlantic City, N.J. A great show in a small venue. The boys sounded very good and the band was typicallyexcellent. They have just completed recording a new LP, that is scheduled for release this fall,
but concentrated on the hits which made my wife and I (and everyone else there) happy.
They played for an hour and forty five minutes including two encores.

After the show I had a strong urge to post a chart from the 80's again but decided to go back
    the seventies.

This week's chart is from July 21, 1973

    Code:

     1. Bad, Bad Leroy Brown...............[B]Jim Croce[/B]

    Michael I LOVE WIDE S-T-E-R-E-O!

Just love The Carpenters...I'm a little partial, my wife's voice is almost identical to Karen's, not by choice(same timber). Although I can hear other similarities even some of the 40's female singers. I'm sure proud of her.
A nice set of tunes in this chart!

According to everyhit.com the only common artist between the UK and US charts at that time were the Carpenters. I had just turned 8 at the time and my parents loved the Carpenters - whereas my brothers who are around 10 years older than me favo(u)red Deep Purple.

The UK charts of the same period also featured
Gary Glitter .........................I'm The Leader Of The Gang (I Am)
Barry Blue............................(Dancing) On A Saturday Night
    Mungo Jerry...........................Alright Alright Alright
    Suzi Quatro...........................48 Crash
Limmie & The Family Cookin............You Can Do Magic
    Osmonds...............................Goin' Home
    Al Martino............................Spanish Eyes (re-issue)
Elton John............................Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting
Diana Ross............................Touch Me In The Morning
    Goons ................................Ying Tong Song (re-issue)
    Nazareth..............................Bad Bad Boy

    Happy memories - Andrew

I give a ditto to Grant, this was a week after my 17th birthday, and there isn't a loser on that chart.

Can't remember the last time I heard the Billy Preston tune - always liked that number.

I'd agree totally! It's really, really hard to pick a favourite, at best a three way tie. Shambala, Smoke On The Water, and Give Me Love. The rest aren't exactly filler songs either. ;) What a great time to be a teenager!

Andrew - Thanks for the U.K. chart post. I really enjoy seeing these charts from other countries. Most of us here in the U.S. had very little exposure to European pop music in the 60's and 70's outside of the major cross-over hits. Of course in the mid-sixties the U.S. pop charts where dominated by U.K. artists but there were lots of British hits that never hit here. I think it's cool to see what was happening musically in the rest of the world at these weekly mile posts. Thanks mate!

    Dave & Friends:

Dave, welcome back from your trip!

Ahh!, the summer of 1973. I was 22, a Senior in college and married (later divorced). I really enjoy the music from this time period. While I am not a huge fan of Give Me Love and Playground Of My Mind, I enjoy every song on this chart.

"When I think back on all crap I learned in high school" from Kodachrome. One of the great lyrical lines from the Golden Age of Top 40.

Natural High is a title that does not receive the airplay today that it truly deserves.

    Thanks Dave!

    Bob :)

Re: Re: This Week's Top 10 Chart

Hmmmm, the only place I ever heard "Natural High" was on Soul Train. No radio ststion I know of back then ever played it. In fact, I had forgotten all about the song until I bought Rhino's "Soul Hits Of The 70s" series ten years ago.

What stands out to me is how much more popular the Osmonds music was in the Netherlands.

Dave B., I'm sure you got that year wrong. You'd better double check that! I'm sure that chart was like - the day before yesterday or something.

No wonder I was a happy kid! :)

    Re: The Dutch 1973 chart:

Strange to see so many top o' the list entries for the Osmonds, with some US heavyweight charters (Wings, Doobie Brothers, Stevie Wonder, War Elton John) near the bottom. I think the Partridge Family record was pretty huge over here as well. I guess we prefer our teen idols on television.....

Hey - looks like The Doors had another post-Morrison charter there (178. Mosquito - The Doors)

Thanks for this post Eric. Several of these are total unfamiliar to me including the Redbone and Albert Hammond tunes which I'm sure may well have been played here but never became hits in my area of the country.

    Dave,

"The Free Electric Band" was a top 30 hit here in the US, and is on one of the Rhino "Have A Nice Day" CDs.

"I'm A Train" and "99 Miles From L.A." are also my favorites by him.
I wonder if there is an Albert Hammond compilation on CD out there. I'd buy it.

Wow, that's a great list! The only ones I'm not familiar with - and therefore aren't "classics" in my book ;) - are the Billy Preston, Clint Holmes, and Bloodstone songs, and even then I'm sure I'd recognize them if I heard them again.

I've actually had a Paul Simon CD in my car for the last couple of weeks, so I've been listening to "Kodachrome" over and over again. Such a great song. And "Give Me Love" may be my favorite post-Beatles George Harrison tune.

    Ray,

You would recognize the Billy Preston song if you heard it:

    Verse:

"I got a song, ain't got no melody (music: ba ba ba) so I'll have to sing it to myself" etc.

    Hook line:

"Will it go round in circles? Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky"

    Ring a bell at all?

No, it's "I've got a song that ain't got no melody, and i'm gonna sing it to my friends".:)

  22. Re: Re: This Week's Top 10 Chart

I can remember when some of the New York radio stations played an edited version of that song; "When I think back on all...I learned in high school". Always made me laugh. Those were the days when you couldn't even say "crap" on the radio. My, how times have changed.

Well, a quick trip over to CD Now did ring a few bells! Sure I remember that one, though I haven't heard it in ages - and may never have thought it a Billy Preston tune.

"Natural High" on the other hand sounds pretty good, but I don't remember that one at all.

As for "Playground in my Mind" - well let's just say that it came flashing back into my mind as well. And I'm almost sorry that it did!! No contest - that's the worst one of an otherwise very strong bunch.

Oh, hell, now look what you made me do...
I've got that damn "My name is Michael, I've got a nickel..." refrain running through my head in "It's a Small World" style.

Gotta go put on some Velvet Underground or something...

    :)
