What I find the most interesting about this is that in my mind some of these seem to "feel" older than others. For example, Queen's "Crazy Little Thing..." still seems "fresh" to my mind, like it was yesterday. However Michael Jackson's "Rock With You" DOES feel like 22 years ago! I feel the same way about the Petty track (fresh) and the Captain & Tennile track (ooooold). HZ p.s. Thanks for the list! This is fun!
Ahhhh, Don't Do me Like That by Tom Petty - God, I love that tune!!! I heard it one day while listening to WFBQ in Indianapolis (home of the Bob and Tom syndicated show) on my older brother's Yamaha receiver, decided I had to have it NOW and hopped on my Schwinn 10 speed and made tracks to Elvy's (record store/head shop in Logansport, IN, home of Mr. Happy Burger - but I digress...). Elvy's discounted vinyl, and I think I paid less than $6 for my copy. MoFi's gold disc is pretty good, but some Steve/tube remastering might unsizzle the highs just a touch!
The fact that all of these songs were on the radio at one time is quite a shocker. Lot of great songs in there, and a few "Lost 45's", ironically.
I have nothing to do with this site...but now that you mention it...check out http://www.lost45s.com/top100.html for a list of their top 100 45s and a radio show dedicated to playing them and interviewing the artists. The 2 CD's they've produced have helped to complete my CD collection for some long forgotten songs!
Wow - great '45's site! That top ten is 'bare bones' as far as I am concerned. Just one or two things I like. I was never too impressed with '80's music in general. But thanks, Dave B! Interesting stuff! It's funny what is a hit in various areas - I've never heard of the Michael Jackson tune!
Gary, My weekly chart is actually taken from the Billboard Top Ten so it's a national chart not regional. Rock With You is from the album Off The Wall; Michael's first solo effort after leaving Motown and his first collaboration with Quincy Jones. If you saw the picture of Jackson on the cover you would not recognize him. The song initially charted on 11/3/79 and was number 1 for four weeks remaining on the Top 100 for a total of 24 weeks. The LP charted on 9/1/79 and remained on the Billboard LP chart for 169 weeks peaking at number 3.
You gotta be kidding! You never heard it? "Rock With You" was a domestic and international hit. You know, "When ya feel that beat, and we can ride the boogie, share that beat of looovve, I wanna ROCK with you (all night), dance you in the day...dance the night awayyyyy" ...oh well...I guess you didn't listen to Jackson music... Anyway, it depends on what one considers garbage. I consider the Rupert Holmes song garbage. Also, I consider all of those songs as 70s songs because they all were recorded in the 70s and most charted in the 70s.
Grant, Until today I'd never heard of it either as it didn't make the Canadian charts at all but (yuk!) Rupert Holmes did.
Hmmm, did you live in Vancouver in 1980? I know that the Canadians always frowned on putting US made music on the airwaves.
