I bought this set recently and agree totally. I'm not fussed about the tiny sleeves but the music for around £15 is sensational. Very highly recommended release.
Kinda hard to score the Go-Betweens set at a sane price. The Donny Hathaway set is a very enjoyable mastering.
The Fleetwood Mac set (between '69 and'74) was my introduction to their earlier songs. I already had the Pete Green era CD's but, their '71, '72 era is all class.
Offhand (I guess most of these aren't actually 5 CDs, but they are the same kind of budget sets)... Scorpions (I only needed "In Trance" from this) Rory Gallagher (why do I even have this? Is there an album I don't have in another format?) Franco Battiato (2 sets) Patty Pravo 6CD (Sony) Those Universal Italia 6 (or 4) CD sets: Cantautori Italiani (vols. 1-5) Progressive Italia (vols. 1-8) Patty Pravo (4CD) C. S. I. Eugenio Finardi Umberto Balsamo (6CD) NDW Classics (I have a couple of these) Krautrock (I have a couple of these) (grrr I hate that term so much)
lve been after the PIL set but it's hard to get and quite expensive. The last one l picked up was the Meatloaf set.
I haven't seen many of these out in the wild lately. I was going through some of my boxes and found I had left one off of my original list, and that is the Bad Company set. I'm always happy if I happen upon one of these in my hunting. Such a great deal.
This set is great featuring the first 5 Europe albums. The Final Countdown in it's original Swedish album cover art too.
It's my birthday today and I have just received the 5cd sets of: Jefferson Airplane Harry Nilsson Donny Hathaway Alice Cooper (volume 2 - I got Vol. 1 last Christmas).
I bought my first ones from Ebay, they were the two Original Album Classics from Jethro Tull (Songs From The Wood through Roots To Branches). $20 for 10 albums is a great deal!
Think this was part of an EMI '5 Album Set' series for the Australian market. Uses the awful remasters I believe.
I can’t comment on Rod as I'm not a fan , but the 1st two Montrose cds are brilliant especially the debut , Rock Gold !
I just got this for $40, though it is TEN albums, one of them a double, so it's still in-line with the 5 disc sets. If this were a vinyl set, it'd be $500, easily.
I see this more in the "clamshell tradition", which is a separate entity from the 3 or 5 disc sets in my mind. I've got a few of these too: Yes - Studio albums 1969-1987 (14 CDs) ZZ Top - Complete albums 1970-1990 (10 CDs) Rush - Studio albums 1989-2007 (7 CDs) Joe Cocker - The album recordings 1984-2007 (14 CDs) Mark Knopfler - Studio albums 1996-2007 (6 CDs) There are also sets like this by Dire Straits, The Police, and I also remember a UFO set in the same vein. And also, while not following the design and not being on the same label, the Manfred Mann's Earth Band DVD Collection (5 DVDs) and The Hooters' 30th Anniversary Fan Collection (4 CDs, 2007-2010) also are clamshell sets with that approach.
I popped into a small music shop near me today and picked up the 5 disc Allman Brothers set. It includes these albums: The Allman Brothers Band Idlewild South Brothers and Sisters Eat a Peach At Fillmore East
I used to see these at B&N all of the time but haven't seen any in years. I have the George Benson and J. Geils sets as well as Ronstadt and Mayfield. I used to buy some for Xma presents. Any thoughts as to where we can get them in the states other than Amazon?
