It seems there is always pent up demand for discussing The Replacements on this board and yet most of the threads are closed, so I thought it might be nice to have a one-stop shop for people to ask questions, offer opinions, and post any news about the band or it's members that might be out there. So please join in!

The thing that originally inspired me to open this thread was the fact that The Replacements seem to be teasing an upcoming release. It might be premature to open a thread specifically devoted to it, but yesterday on Twitter the band's account posted:

    The Replacements on Twitter

"It’s true: we threw a buncha tapes in the river once. But these? These we just hid in the basement."

I've got a question. Is there a backstory to the recurring gag where most (not all) of their albums end with the sound of a creaking door and footsteps?

Even with virtually no details (aside from two of them listing "rough mixes") those tape boxes are incredibly tantalizing.

Years ago, Peter Jesperson was talking about the possibity of a live box. He further suggested the only way "The S*** Hits The Fans" gets reissued would be as part of such a set. Could this somehow be related to that project finally coming to fruition?

"Rough mixes" generally implies studio recordings to me, though that's not always the case.

That's just on the reissues with bonus materials.

A release of the Tony Berg sessions that were abandoned and later became Don't Tell A Soul would be great (in theory, anyway).

Thanks! The Rhinos were how I was (very belatedly!) introduced to most of the band's albums and just assumed the sound was present on the original albums (yes, I was VERY late to the party). That's even weirder, I think!

It's sort of cheesy but I get it: they're walking into the vaults and throwing the doors open wide...

Just a way to separate the original albums from the bonus cuts.

Yep. It’s just offhand I can’t think of another reissue campaign that separates the original album from the bonus material with a sound effect (though I’m sure there must be examples). What’s odder is that I think they skipped at least one album (Tim maybe? I’ll have to double check). If they’re gonna take that approach, you’d think they’d do it consistently. Then again, when have they ever done things precisely as you’d expect?

Who would have figured Don’t Tell A Soul would have gotten the deep dive treatment before Pleased To Meet Me (which I hope they also revisit in turn, as there a lot more left in the vault there)?

Is disc one the album mix that we’ve always had?

That’s what I’d guess (it’s certainly typical for sets like this) but it might be worth noting that although Matt Wallace produced the original album, Chris Lord-Alge & Skip Sailor actually mixed it. But they’ve probably just using name as a recognizable shorthand.

Only “Date To Church” is listed as a remix, and I assume (hope) it restores the Tom Waits manic “preacher” vocal that couldn’t be included due to label clearances.

I'm not really sure but I'm guessing "Matt Wallace mix" means the original mix before Chris Lord-Alge?

So the same sessions but different mix and less "1989" sounding. Maybe

Because that mix is something people have always complained about. So that would be a selling point.
