I strongly disagree - Tim's designs are something special and unlike much of the generic 50's and 60's stuff you describe.

I guess it's like saying that a Radioshack cassette deck is the equal of an AEG M15A simply because both use magnetic tape.

It is really no surprise that on similar notes people like Tesla get burried on page 557, while average electricians like Edison get the front cover.

like you said, I appreciate Tim for what he knows and let's just leave it at that.

PS: I just re-read your reply - why are you throwing such an attitude towards this discussion?

I think we were all thinking the same thing about you, especially since you jumped into this thread with:

"sorry, couldn't disagree more - particularly as the publisher of Tone audio you ought to do a bit more research before you speak "as a matter of fact":"

Then you "supported" everything you said with what sounded like ad copy.

I have nothing against EAR...I think they make very nice stuff. But you sound like their salesman.

Then again, the Republic of the Congo is notorious for having a highly unstable electricity supply, a highly unlikely location for an audiophile.

    I smell a sockpuppet...

And I must admit that I am very curious as to what comprises the system you listen to...

You sound like quite the expert on hifi setup as well as design.

I'm thinking Magnepan, VPI and Audio Research.

I met Tim DP at a London show

He had modded a Nagra IV Nagramaster

He was a typically eccentric Brit with enthusiastic brilliance and short temper.

Anybody who did Gilmores floating studio and his fastidious demands is OK by me.

    Why is this thread deteriorating???

    Roger

    IMHO....

He built the special tape players for MoFi back in the day, right? I'd be very happy about listening to those speakers...

You can find a quite a few photos on this link from the last year's Lonodon Heathrow Hifi Show. From slide 25 you can see the kind of open baffle EAR speakers. Their sound was really effortless as I remember.

De Paravicini was the first audio designer that really interested me. Reading his interviews really inspired me. I have used his very affordable 834P phono stage while I was starting out with nicer gear, and it was fantastic (it's still in the family).

The EAR room at CES had wonderful sound, and I got a chance to shake Tim's hand and thank him. He was extremely cordial to me.

In the beginning I always wanted EAR amps and pre's, but I could never find them used. Why? Because their owners clutch them tightly and don't sell them. That is a good sign.

He has done a lot of work to develop Quad ESL amplification, and his modifications to recording and record cutting procedures (like MFSL's Gain 2 system) are awesome. He was an early proponent of wide bandwidth, which I believe in, myself.

I think he has made a very critical contribution to both recording and playback of fine audio, both in terms of what he directly designed and built, and also what he influenced others to design and build. An asset to the audio community. So what if he has a bad day and snaps at someone sometimes.

Can't wait to see him and his speakers this weekend.

I've heard his stuff many , many times at various places
Great amps no question- but I prefer Glenn Crofts designs every time

Turntable, sounds great but at the last show he needed elastic bands to get the tonearm to work properly - worrying

and the speakers did nothing for me, a radical design but sounded dull and a bit boring.

  12. I've never heard EAR gear. I'm definitely curious to hear them, now.

I'm glad someone resurrected this thread. I had forgotten about the EAR speaker debut.

I'm pretty certain that Tim also did some mods to one or more of Bob Ludwig's ATR tape machines.

David Gilmour's studio on a houseboat may be his coolest project.

Tonepub, are you venting because Tim got pissed at you?

blitzableiter, you're beating a dead horse.

vinyl anachronist just likes to argue, and is at the ready to defend his buddy tonepub.

That's my take on this silly fight...over nothing.

Maybe not, but your mastery of spelling could get you a job as an editor for Affordable Audio e-zine.

I like it that everyone here has a sense of humor. Even though sometimes we seem like we don't.

    Thanks for the chuckle.
