I was stunned when I first saw the movie back in 1980. I could not believe it was the same David McCallum in the Invisible Man TV series. By far he is the youngest looking actor that I know (of all time). Followed by William Defoe, Kevin Bacon.. a few more.

I first saw A Night to Remember as a 9 year old and it captured my imagination. The story of the Titanic has fascinated me ever since. one thing "Night" captures perfectly is the British "stiff upper lip" and the cut glass tones and rigid class system of the era. Cameron's movie was a spectacle and still holds up well 25 years later but it doesn't quite manage to capture that stiff Edwardian pre war era as well as Night does. Titanic would've been a whole lot better if Leo had missed the boat...

  6. I’m sorry but Titanic may be an epic film with groundbreaking visuals and splendid production design but it sucks. Two words. The script.

Now I want to see A Night to Remember. As long as annoying old Rose isn’t in it. I can’t stand that old bat. Young Rose was no prize either but she was passable.

Gloria Stuart (1910-2010) played 'Old Rose' in TITANIC but if you're dissatisfied with her character and/or performance you can always go back 65 years and watch her in THE OLD DARK HOUSE (1932) or THE INVISIBLE MAN (1933).

We watched the Blu-ray of A NIGHT TO REMEMBER last night. I was once again surprised at how many of the actors in this British movie that I was familiar with, mostly from UK TV shows.
Kenneth More - I'd seen him in the old PBS version of THE FORSYTH SAGA
Honor Blackman - The pre-Mrs. Peel partner in THE AVENGERS who also appeared in DANGER MAN.
Kenneth Griffith - unforgettable in his appearances in THE PRISONER and also the final DANGER MAN
David McCallum - MAN FROM UNCLE of course and also THE OUTER LIMITS
Laurence Naismith - did many episodes for Quinn Martin in the States including THE FUGITIVE and THE INVADERS
and other familiar faces from more background roles.

Yeah it peaked my interest as well. Good to see James go back to Titanic in some way. The video was a good way of doing it. IMHO

I fail to see what the big deal is about the whole Rose /Jack romance sub plot ?
In no way does that subtract from the story and what unfolded .
We seem to have quite a few film snobs here or men that just can’t handle any kind of romantic storyline which is odd .
If you want a straight telling of the story and what happened there are numerous books and documentaries to delve into .

A Night to Remember was released in 1958 and is way too old to be enjoyed now .

@Djmover: You realize the last sentence of your post makes zero sense. There is ~no~ movie that's too old to be enjoyed by someone. Your last sentence is something I would expect to be typed out by someone with the mentality of a 10-year-old.

"We can't watch this movie cuz, like, it's too old".

    It's 5th Grade all over again . . .

    Say what?
What is the age a movie can be to still be enjoyable today?

Agreed. I don't understand people who get annoyed with films based off historical events not being historically accurate. It's a film (!!), not a documentary, and like you said, there are plenty of the latter if that is what you (the general "you") want.

Titanic is a brilliant and fantastically done film.

What’s great about the accuracy of ‘A Night To Remember’ is that many of the survivors of the tragedy were still alive at the time the movie came out and their stories were collected for the book the film is based on. So you’re getting first person recollections from people who actually experienced it. The boat breaking in two was confirmed decades later when the wreck was found in the 1980’s.

‘Titanic’ is a romance with the events as a backdrop. ‘A Night To Remember’, with its documentary feel and the real emotions expressed, is almost like seeing it happen.
