Reality. According to Robbie Williams on the album (produced by Trevor Horn of The Buggles!).

Ronstadt/Harris/Parton changed it to "20th Century" in their Trio version, but even that is terribly out of date now.

I always thought it meant a bathroom wall for some reason. The video gives no clues.

That's Old Fashioned - the whole song!

We hold hands in the movie show
So they say that we're old fashioned
Or we stroll beneath the silvery moon
And we carve our initials in the old oak tree.
    That's old fashioned.
That's the way love should be.
We enjoy sitting side by side
In the booth at the ice cream parlor
    Where we play the nickelodeon
And we dance when we hear our favorite melody.
    That's old fashioned.
That's the way love should be.
    It's a modern changing world
    Everything is moving fast.
But when it comes to love I like
    What they did…
    It's a modern changing world
    Everything is moving fast.
But when it comes to love I like
What they did in the past.
I'm the kind who loves only one
So the boys say I'm old fashioned.
Let them laugh, honey I don't mind.
I've made plans for a wedding day for you and me.

    That's old fashioned.
That's the way love should be.

"With my pen and my electric typewriter" -- Elvis Costello from "Everyday I Write the Book," 1983.

The funny things is that by '83, this line was already semi-outdated. A lot of people were using word processors. I remember writing college papers on a program called WordStar around this time, plus we had a Radio Shack TRS-80 that had a word processor in it.

    Ramones, "Teenage Lobotomy"

"DDT did a job on me
Now I am a real sickie"

I don't know for sure if lobotomies have been banned but DDT certainly has.

There's also "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment" by the Ramones but ECT is still used under certain circumstances I think?

Yes! I referred to a local non-network-affiliated TV station (channel 57) as a "UHF station" to a twenty-something coworker and to my surprise they had no idea what I was talking about!

To think that, though, you would have to blow past the line about the dime that comes near the end of the song (I quoted it above).
