Yeah I saw it was first released in '83. So technically it was not his first album?

Anyway, I streamed it on CD quality before buying and the BG vinyl mops it pretty well. Just my opinion. Looks like Craft now has the latest on Qobuz as of Friday.

I thought it was a demo session and not an album, it is too short for an album - Muse had to tack on a track from a 1972 Joe Chambers session to fill it out.

Great post! I’m looking at the market for purchasing a tractor/cartridge setup tool. How is it compared to Dr Feickert? Another option would be WallyTractor.

Streamed Blackstone Legacy yesterday and did nothing for my tastes so an easy pass. I love the “Rosewood” and “Woody Three” albums and most of “Song of Songs” but BL was defo not my “cup of tea”.
“Glass Bead Games” an absolute winner!

You think so? I hear more similarities with Bitches Brew. The electric stuff, Lenny White on drums and of course Bennie Maupin. Similarities in format and sound. I think the Strata-East sound is way different from this one. Fully agree on those Pure Pleasure reissues: people should definitely pick them up. Especially the Tollivers and the Clifford Jordan record.
You kiddin right? Hyped? It was about time that it was getting some attention. You're making subjective statements claiming they are facts. In my opinion this is the best Woody record he has made and in my opinion it's even better than Bitches Brew. I already had the Japanese reissue but very happy for those who were waiting for this reissue.

Great session that is. Could easily have been a BN classic if it was put out then as a Blue Note record.

    Oh dear, here we go!
I could’ve added the “IMHO” tag at the end, but as opinions on music are entirely subjective, I thought, what’s the point, this is an intelligent crowd it’s pretty obvious what I wrote is my opinion …. because I wrote it!

If you think Blackstone Legacy is wonderful, great, I don’t, but it doesn’t mean anything at the end of the day, for example, I’m not keen on The Beatles, but I believe they are quite a popular band …. am I right and everyone else wrong, or is it entirely subjective?

As I don’t know you in any kind of way, I don’t feel for interpreting what I think that you might mean. I don’t have the intellectual capacity to guess what the other user behind his laptop might mean with his statement. So I just read and take it literally.

Everything you read on here is subjective opinion.
That is about the only factual statement you will see on this forum. You don’t have to know me or anyone else, everything discussed here is subjective opinion ….. apart from, UHQR boxes are stupid, that’s an indisputable fact:D

As mentioned the Glass Bead Games is essential, PP just released a Harold Vick title called 'Don't Look Back' that is also excellent.

Awesome! I bet you will get much enjoyment from all of those incredible records.

I listened to "Out Of The Afternoon" and "Blowin' The Blues Away" again last night and happy as heck with how they both turned out, My copy of the Roy Haynes had some noisy surface noise in-between most of the songs but after another cleaning and a couple spins through the issues it completley went away. I have heard different feedback on what causes that. One that I have heard more than once is that sometimes it's caused from being one of the early ones pressed. I have noticed the same thing with test pressings as well and it's the same type of surface noise. Now I don't know any of this to be a fact, just speculation. Anyone else have any ideas? Nonetheless "Out Of The Afternoon" is such a pleasure to hang out and listen to. Such a great record!

Regarding the Horace Silver, I think I have to say I almost like how it turned out better. This is absolutely one of the best sounding BNC records in my collection which is now at 26 titles. This one really turned out fantastic. Everything about it, the soundstage, the detail you hear from the instruments acorss the board is sweet as can be. But as I mentioned earlier, it's Silver's piano that sucks you in and you just go WOW! does this sound good. For $23 this is quite the deal. "Blowin' The Blues Away" is dare I say, a true "gem" from this great series! Record is dead flat and quiet throughout...

Thanks! I'm sure I'll enjoy them. May even report back with my thoughts.

That Blowin' The Blues Away is definitely on my list. Bit more expensive in the UK at about £27. Might wait for the price to go down a bit. But I reckon I'll be in for it eventually.

Speaking of gems. What would you say your 10-15 gems are for BNCs? We did this with the Tone Poets and I found it interesting reading. I haven't got loads of BNCs. Had a lot of problems with pressing issues. I've bought Moanin' 4 times and have yet to get a copy without stitching. Pretty aggravating.

Great idea, but if we do that it would be best to post on the proper thread. I say the BN 80th's and the BNC series should be considered as one here. I'm sure the lists would be all over the place as mine would not include hardly any of the heavy hitters since I already had them and as you mentioned there are more pressing issues on these than the Tone Poets. Too much time on our hands, but it sure is fun.

Oh yeah. It should go on the BNC thread. I would also agree that BN80 and BNC should be considered the same. Especially as the BN80 series was shortlived and the BNC essentially an extention of it.

Speaking of BN80. Indestructible. That would definitely be part of my gems. I know people who have the Music Matters says that it is superior to the BN80. But I don't have it. So it's a case of ignorance is bliss, for me.

I am aware of the Wally. That would have been rather more expensive. I believe Mike Pranka (the Dynavector U.S. distributor) uses a Wally. He is here in St. Louis and does Dynavector setups for my dealer.

The SMARTTractor is a far better tool than the Feickert. Much easier to use and more accurate. I sold my Feickert protractor last week and it's on its way to the new owner. I hadn't used it in years though, in favor of the Clearaudio alignment protractor. I may end up selling that one too. That might be harder to sell because it uses IEC geometries (e.g. IEC r=60.325, which = Löfgren A IEC) and most people are less familiar with that.

(Blackstone Legacy) Don't want to wait until the end of the week to go get my copy so I called up Amazon and was able to finagle a $10 credit so I got it for roughly $30 and it arrives by 3pm tomorrow. Its been so long since I gave it a serious listen as I hardly ever played my CD of it. Fond memories when it arrives I bet. So cool you are digging the heck out of it!

Yes it is and I got lazy and never ordered the recent vinyl version since I had a CD. But that has changed as I preordered the Japanese 2 LP version from Amazon.

Do you know anything about the mastering/pressing of this version? Is it the Groove-Diggers one?

I believe I heard the Pure Pleasure version is cut from digital source, but I don't know the details.

I can see that people relate it to Bitches Brew, but not so much for me. I think the two albums have a different vibe, but I concede that Blackstone Legacy is in the fusion vein, but it also has some of the kinds of things I hear in mainstream jazz of the 70s, like some things in the Strata-East offerings.

In any case it's a nice album and adventurous enough to make it a great example of the period.

Yes that's the version. It got released in Japan last month and Amazon has it projected on 10/6, I'm giving it a try regardless of the mastering and just hope it will sound good.

According to what PP told me, they used a tape to cut the record. Whether it was a copy tape or EQ'd production tape I do not know.

I see. The Pure Pleasure version is also listed on Amazon by a 3rd party seller, for less money.

I thought I had read somewhere that they sourced that record from a needledrop or something. I don't want to start an unfounded rumor but I remember reading that. Maybe from @Tim1954 ?

I think I might hold off now on this. I might have over reacted, too many other records on the way plus that Japanese version was a bit pricey. Glad I saw your post...so easy to cancel on Amazon if you do it on time.

Back to Tone Poet talk, giving Schizophrenia and Let 'Em Roll another spin later today. I left the Shorter off my gems list and want to make sure I did not make a mistake...
