Even ignoring his behaviour, Ken never discusses Jazz in a manner that makes me want to go and seek out what he's discussing (whereas I have bought a number of albums based on Jazz Shepherd video's) I haven't watched this yet, but I did watch his video with Zev Feldman regarding the recent Lee Morgan set, and I found it embarrassing to watch that Ken clearly hadn't bothered to do his research first. I mean he didn't even know how many discs were in the set.
The Joe Harley interview is really excellent, even for the Ken haters. Ken more or less shuts up and lets him talk. I think is a must-watch for everyone here.
I agree, it’s a very good and informative interview. Although I recently unsubscribed from his channel, this video showed up in my YouTube suggestions.
Enjoyed this. No idea who Ken is, still a good talk. Bummer people are telling Joe to stop with the hard bop
Review of My Conception by London Jazz Collector. He thinks it’s the best sounding TP yet. Sonny Clark: My Conception (1959) Blue Note Tone Poet
It really might be. Definitely up there with Katanga! and One Flight Up. I think the latter is the tops in terms of pure SQ. Excited to get my hands on The All Seeing Eye today. Out for Delivery now.
Someone mentions that McCallef seems to not have always done his research. He's enthusiastic, but being less than fully informed about some basic things makes him come across as less informed than an interviewer should be. A minor correction - Joe Harley mentions Now He Sings, Now He Sobs as being on United Artists. It was actually on Solid State.
Ha! Calling out the man himself...in his defense it is a division of UA, not quite the same thing, I get it. My copy as well and obviously I'm quite excited for this one. Will be late tonight before I get to listen though.
musically, it’s no question that black fire is essential. However, there’s definitely some piano warbling going on, and there is real no other way to determine how sensitive you are to it other then to listen to it.
I like the fact that Joe is talking about the 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 titles! Keep em' coming as far as I am concerned.
Tough choice. I'd go with Andrew Hill, Dexter Gordon or Sonny Clark on that one. I like hte Byrd album but it's not as essential as the others.
Best music - Black Fire Best combination of music and sonics - One Flight Up The warble is real with BF.
Yep, The All Seeing Eye is another wonderful release. The SQ didn't blow my away quite as hard as those elite ones we mentioned (My Conception, Katanga, One Flight Up in particular) on first listen, but it's up to the same standard as all the rest. I love this era of Blue Note and the more avant garde sound on this one.
Happy to get this in today. I wish Wayne recorded more with his brother Alan. At least, we have Mephistopheles. No photo of Alan in the gatefold?
He is the best, and actually talks about the music. His amount of subscribers compared to other channels is pretty telling though
