Those Beach House ones are awesome. For the Flaming Lips, I'm not as much into Embryonic, but Yoshimi is great. The Soft Bulletin is tops, but I think it is technically 1999 :D

Finally, someone else besides me loves The Delagdos! Hate is a staggering album. For my money "The Drowning Years" is as ****ing depressing a song as I've ever heard and that includes "Exit Music". I wonder when Alun wrote that was he thinking of the film "Gattaca".

  8. Much of the Hate album has a very unconventional background, as The Delgados were originally approached by the American painter Joe Coleman to write, rehearse and then perform musical accompaniment to a film showing several of his pieces at London's Barbican over one night in the spring of 2001. I believe their plan was to take the rest of the year off to concentrate on running their label and gathering new material, but they ended up revisiting a lot of ideas from the so-called Coleman Sessions for Hate. During an interview, it was suggested that The Drowning Years might have been a later creation, but the resulting album's liner notes reference Coleman as being responsible for lighting the touch paper that led to this whole project's creation, plus the b-side Coalman (which is also a bonus track on the main LP in some regions) was a further nod to the artist's inspiration.

While a recording of that most unlikely collaboration has yet to surface, it wouldn't surprise me if such a thing exists, particularly when you consider its importance to the group when developing Hate. I would absolutely love to see even highlights of this feature on an expanded reissue, preferably also with the handful of subsequent acoustic appearances made during a tour of US college radio stations, including a stripped down version of The Drowning Years. Another major influence on the final sound of Hate was supposedly the postnatal depression Emma Pollock experienced following the birth of her son with drummer Paul Savage, and I'm sure it was once mentioned on some long-forgotten corner of the internet that the Andy named at the end of Child Killers was of personal significant to Alun Woodward, though I don't believe he's ever discussed this particular detail or the possible Gattaca connection with The Drowning Years. I might have to ask them when I next get in touch...

You see, I have a great story that I thought you might like to read. After ordering a proverbial boatload of items from their Chemikal Underground site around the time of their split as a way to fill some gaps in my collection, they ended up sending everything in the same box along with an invoice that contained a handwritten message on the rear by Emma personally thanking me for being a fan of such discerning and expensive taste. On behalf of her colleagues, she even threw in a few leftover promotional items. Just a few months later, I sent them a photo taken at the wedding of a close friend and one of my then-bandmates, since I wore my prized Universal Audio shirt for this occasion. The letter attached to this stated my regret at never getting to see The Delgados live, although I did praise one of Emma's shows in Leeds that I had been able to attend, which I seem to recall being in support of her first solo album, Watch The Fireworks. Because of this, I got another brilliant note, this one from Stewart Henderson, who said my picture gave everyone in the office a laugh. Best of all, he included the recent CHEM087CD+DVD set.

Above missing the chance to witness one of my absolute favourite groups in the flesh, I'm more annoyed at myself for not checking the case for that particular compilation, as he'd left a further invitation* for our band to cut an EP with Paul at their CHEM19 studio whenever we wanted to take him up on the offer. Unfortunately, by this point my friend's wife had barely survived a serious car crash that left her with major spinal injuries, and her rehabilitation naturally took priority over any musical career aspirations, with our group already on the way to becoming a thing of the past. The next few months after that were a low point for me as well, but I remained in contact with my new "friends from the north," as they'd often conclude e-mails. Communication dried up soon after they stopped producing a series of podcasts that I'd really been enjoying, with Stewart previously hinting their company had some business problems that needed addressing. Thankfully, it appears that Chemikal Underground has endured, so I'll end for now by doing my bit and lending further promotion to their 2012 retrospective, Secret Hits, which is still available for download entirely free, though I can't promise you'll feel guilt-free for not going on to financially support them:

FREE ‘Secret Hits’ Chemikal Sampler |

*Sadly, I lost this during a house move, but I do vividly remember Stewart taking pride in a similar demo The Fratellis recorded at CHEM19, helping them to become another local success story!

Thanks for all that detail. The reason I brought up 'Gattaca' was the line in "The Drowning Years" - "If that's all there is then I might as well get in the fire". Seems very specific.

I have to make some updates! I've recently discovered These New Puritans' Field of Reeds, and I think it has to knock Shearwater out of my top 5, and possibly even move ahead of Kate Bush! Similarly, I think Julia Holter's Aviary may just be tied with Kate for that fifth place. And in the close contenders, I'll have to add Sons of Kemet, Your Queen is a Reptile.

This is very tough, but trying to stick to 'younger acts' these are five that I love :

Polica - Give You The Ghost (I could choose any of their releases)

The Strokes - Room On Fire (even better than the debut)

Haim - Days Are Gone (a perfect debut)

Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine (all of hers are fantastic)

Blur - The Magic Whip (arguably my favourite Blur album, an amazing return)
