    - Would have liked it even better if it were a completely fictional story, as opposed to a based-on/taking liberties with, some real-life events.

In rough order of best to less best:

    -Raiders
    -ET
    -Jaws
    -CE3K

Basically nitpicking to separate any of those, though - they're all "A+" movies.

    -Last Crusade
    -Jurassic Park
    -Temple of Doom

    Empire of the Sun

And for good measure Last Crusade rounds off my choices. These are the only ones I really love and outside of generally liking a few others I don’t care for his other work at all. Munich was surprisingly pretty good but everything else from his later years has been terribly boring to me.

I need to rewatch 1941. I remember liking things in it but that the whole thing just didn’t work.

The one thing that still astounds me is the hate directed towards Temple these days. I just don’t understand it as the movie is magical and beautifully made-and the one film just as breathless as Raiders. I think that perhaps the reason is it’s even more of a 30’s serial and most don’t like classic era styles anymore.
The one that needs criticism is Crusade because like Return of the Jedi it retreads many points of the original film and is nowhere near as inspired as its illustrious predecessors.

    Top 4 are:

    Jaws
    Close Encounters
    Raiders
    E.T.

Why Speilberg, though? Why not Scorcese?

Is it OK if I spell Scorsese “Scorcese”?

    Ha - I didn't even notice that misspelling! :D

I'm always astonished at how many people who've worked with Scorsese mispronounce his name. It's "Scor-sessy", but even cast/crew on his films often say "Scor-say-zee"!

  15. If you go by the They Shoot Pictures Don't They website, the Spielberg films that have made the top 1000 are these:
    Jaws (no. 91)
    E.T. (no. 119)
    Close Encounters (no. 203)
    Raiders (no. 220)
    Schindler's List (no. 222)
    A.I. (no. 522)
    Saving Private Ryan (no. 722)
    Jurassic Park (no. 766)

By contrast, Kubrick (my favourite filmmaker, with a much smaller output) has 11 in the top 1000 and Hitchcock has 13).

BTW, it would be nice if a Gort spelled Mr. Spielberg's name correctly in the thread title. ("I" before "E," as it was meant to be.)

Seems that A.I. has really been rehabilitated since its release. I personally thought it was terrible (probably because it sailed over my head). I thought the other two movies that came out around the same time (Catch Me If You Can and Minority Report) were much better.

I saw "Minority Report" last night and am not a sci-fi fan, wanted to give it a try. It is very outlandish in many respects, but wildly imaginative. Overall I sort of liked it, but it is way too long , and there are a couple things that could of been made clearer. They made such a major part of the story his son's death but never explained exactly what happened to him. Did the powers that be at Pre -Crime kidnap him?
Then who was Anne Lively to Lamar? How did he know the daughter was gifted?
I know it's sci-fi, not supposed to make total sense but I felt these were incomplete parts of the film.
I do not find Cruise to be a good actor, pretty much plays his persona but here he was good to me.

    Duel

    Honourable mention to Munich.
Munich is a tough one but I could watch any of the others at the drop of a hat. Spielberg is a good and sometimes compelling storyteller. He keeps me in my seat waiting for the next reveal.
A shout out to 1941 also. As the OP said, it is a magnificent misfire and I really like this fun film.
Lastly, I have a soft spot for his version of War of the Worlds. Not great, but entertaining and doesn't meander too much - ok, maybe a bit.
