The guessed at premise in the video of the value of human fighter pilots vs unmanned drones is an interesting one.

The term "Top Gun" refers to the Navy's air combat training school (The Air Force calls their fighter combat training Red Flag) - which used to be at NAS(Naval Air Station) Miramar in San Diego.

With the military base re-alignment done years ago, Top Gun was moved to Fallon, Nevada and Miramar redesignated MCAS (Marine Corp Air Station).

I guess the writers/producers are going to perpetuate the notion that Top Gun is still in San Diego?

Makes sense I suppose; centering the movie around Fallon with a population of about 9,000 may not be 'sexy' enough.

[edit] I saw the original Top Gun when it came out. I was psyched up as I was working for Cubic Defense in San Diego, which made the Top Gun and Red Flag systems for the Navy and Air Force.

That scene where Kelly McGillis' character is giving a debriefing in front of the pilots; that was done in one of the DDS trailers (Display and Debriefing Subsystems). The DDS can replay the combat training system just flown by recording/tracking all the aircraft telemetry, then replay it on vector based displays(back then it was crude stick figures for planes and terrain). I got to work in that trailer and sat in the same seat Tom Cruise did in the movie.

In case anyone is interested in what has happened to the actor (Whip Hubley) who played "Hollywood" in the original film....

Actor whose career soared with ‘Top Gun’ now at home in Maine, and back on stage

While it wasn't mentioned in the article, during the late 90s, Mr. Hubley had the lead of a rebooted "Flipper" TV show. The show also starred a teenage Jessica Alba and Elizabeth Morehead (she was the lead actress in this show), who most of us will remember as the pianist, and George's girlfriend, in the Seinfeld Pez dispenser episode.

A Gort should merge the two threads about Top Gun: Maverick. (And change the release Date listed on this one that I mentioned 11 months ago.)

Ok, I reserve the right to change my mind. And I am.

Having just watched the teaser for the movie, I’m now looking forward to this, and I will actually pay to see it.

But if this turns out to be a “chick flick”, I’m calling my credit card company and reversing the charges based on fraudulent advertising.

(Note: I have nothing against “chick flicks”, when I know I am going to see one.)

Lol - 90% of US movies/television are recruitment vehicles. And that's a conservative estimate.

My thoughts exactly -- 35 years seems so far away from the source. I figure that 20 years could have been the sweet spot for projects like this, so this should have hit in about 2006.

tom cruise has been on a roll lately and i'm not embarrassed to admit that i'm a big fan. this looks like it might be silly and melodramatic and maybe even better than the ultra corny original.
