I encourage everyone in this thread to check out Soma FM, and particularly Groove Salad, if they haven’t heard it. Free internet radio with no commercials. They don’t particularly just play Trip Hop on GS, but rather a mix of downtempo, ambient and chill electronic—including many of the acts mentioned here. There will be entire days where it’s literally all I listen to. They have some other pretty great stations as well, all free, as well as a great phone app: SomaFM
The first 3 Tricky albums and a few of his early EP’s were truly brilliant stuff. He lost me around the time of 2000’s Blowback.
His new autobiography is wonderful. Really excited to see what he’ll do as a full-fledged member in Massive Attack
Love and Rockets' "Hot Trip to Heaven" has a bit of a trip-hop feel in places and it's nothing like anything else in their catalog. Check out "This Heaven", for example. Good album.
Fair amount of stuff in this thread that would be called Tip Hop only via an extremely generous definition of the term, as well as some great stuff that is spot on! Here's a couple of classics
The album of the Nineties. Absolutely fantastic. Not exactly trip-hop, but kindred. Also, Peace Orchestra and Tosca are recommended K&D projects which might actually be closer to trip-hop.
I thought I heard him on one of Massive's singles a couple years ago, but didn't know he had actually rejoined the group. Cool news!
No mention of this yet?! The Trip Hop Bible. You need this and some good herb for the full trip hop experience
Off: 1. "i" associate Trip Hop w/female vocals; may be completely wrong bout that tho. 2. Synths; Industrial & Electronica, from which Trip Hop sprang, typically feature synthesizers over natural instruments. 3. Beat; although mellow, IMO, the beat echoes Acid Jazz/Drum & Bass [over other popular genres beats]. 4. Poppy; prefer Trip Hop to have more of a Pop influence than an Industrial influence [obviously that maybe just me]. If someone were to call the song Synth Pop or something entirely different, i wouldn't argue w/them. As previously stated, Trip Hop boarders many genres IMO: Enjoy.
6 Underground was mentioned earlier and it is a songI became infatuated with. It hit all the right buttons for me, and yet I never connected with any other song by them. I think I have at least 20-25 different mixes of 6 Underground, there are maybe 4 that I still listen to often. Amazing song for me, this is my favorite.
