There's a guy on the west side of Indianapolis who runs a small vintage guitar/hifi shop. He specializes in repair and actually does a pretty good business selling stuff. I've been in his shop a few times and actually watched him make a couple sales. His prices are just a tad higher than what you'd pay on ebay.

To your point, nearly every audio guy I know here also knows Bobby's shop.

A store implies intent to sell.
Sounds to me like he is showing off a collection.

Sellers like these would appear that they would rather own a museum, than a stereo/record store.

Talk about doubling down on arrogance.

Another case: Digital Planet in Murfreesboro, TN was pulling that crap, too. Surprise, surprise. They went out of business. And, in the two weeks before they did, I went back to the store twice (hadn't been there in years) and cleaned them out righteously on the el cheapo. And, let me tell you... ...I shopped with malice. I enjoyed every minute of hearing the owner whine about how it just wasn't affordable to have a shop anymore as I walked out with bags and bags of LP's and CD's. See ya!!!

One of my favorite shops has a motto of "this place is not a museum". Records are priced to move and rarely stick around too long.

Interesting. I used a great guy in Atlanta- he worked out of his house just off of Ptree Industrial. Does the person you referred to own Audio Exchange in Chamblee ?

If so, where is he moving to in SC ?

    Thanks

Yes, that's him. He is moving to Hilton Head. And he (Robert C.) told me that Terry _____, a similar guy, I think in Tenessee is retiring. I know Robert has a helper, don't know if his helper will take over or not!

Robt C- great guy, great work, great price. HHI ? Hmmmm- may be worth a drive every so often to have pieces restored.

Terry in Tn may be Terry DeWick in Knoxville. He has an international rep as a McIntosh specialist. His retirement will impact a lot of people but he did/does have other people working with him, so hopefully impact will be minimal.

    Thanks

I've used that, too. The Duck is a little easier and less messy because of how it's applied.

Bop Street Records in Seattle operates under this MO, or at least used to. I haven't been there in a couple of decades because it turned me off so. I prefer to have everything priced so I know what I"m getting myself into. Don't like being subjected to pricing based on mood or what a price guide says....

There are at least two stores in the greater Boston area that do this. Drives me batty. Basically, I have just done all the work for the shop owners by sifting through bins of junk to find the few decent records and then I have to pay eBay/Discogs prices? Why would I not just use eBay/Discogs? I wouldn’t mind as much if the prices were just on the record from the get-go. And generally these are not particularly busy stores. Why aren’t they pricing the lps beforehand? Oof. They lost my business.

I knew a guy like that. He had a shop in Hendersonville and moved to Waynesville. I'd point out broken records in his inventory, but he wouldn't toss them, claiming someone might want them for the 10" that remained. I believe he's since passed on. No idea what happened to his stuff.

Clearly some sort of opium den.
My EX lived in a tiny village with an equally tiny population, yet it still has a large high end furniture store that has been there for years. No-one ever goes in or out, yet there's always at least one person minding the store and if you wonder in and inquire about their wares, they try to persuade you not to buy. :shh:

I dunno how close you are to Kannapolis NC, but there is a nice little record store for record divers there called Collectors Choice. Pretty much everything in there is $1 and I've found some really great and rare stuff in there. Still just a dollar. I haven't been in there in awhile, but it's still open apparently. I was born and raised in Kannapolis and the place has been there for a looong time, lol. You gotta do your own digging though.

You're in Lusby I see. Do you know of anyplace good for used vinyl in SoMD-- Calvert or St. Mary's? I spend a lot of weekends in Calvert county during the warm weather.

Yeah, I know Clyde pretty well. He was talking about closing up and just selling from his outbuilding at home. He'll sometimes have a piece or two of vintage gear in there for sale as well.

For those who may be interested, his is the only shop in the state that I know of that has more 45s than Lps.

Nah... There's only one record store in the area (St. Mary's) and the owner is a nice guy, but he wants way too much for his stuff, and the records honestly aren't that great. But there is a guy here named Norman, who has a galactic boatload of stuff for sale, (sold out of his home) but he is hard to get ahold of. He has great records, (Blue Notes, Prestige, and rare rock) but the condition isn't as good as it could be, so I stopped buying from him. I probably have the best collection in the area lol.

Small world... I knew he had been in there for awhile. I thought he was closed by now. Last time I was in there, I gave him a decent sized collection of really mint 45's that I knew I'd never play and he pretty much gave me cart blanche of the store. It's cool to give stuff away sometimes.

I find most brick and morter record stores overpriced too. That's why I do all my shopping online at discogs. Stick with sellers with 99.7% + ratings and you will have a good experience..

Actually now that I think of it there is a spot in St. Leonard called the Chesapeake Marketplace. It's kinda big and rambly, but it has a section with records in it. Cheap. My guitarists was in there a couple weeks ago and scored a good haul of stuff, including a couple nice Japanese pressings. You have to pass the turn for it on your way from Alexandria to get to Solomons Island, etc.

Oh yeah-- I know right where that is. I've been in there a couple of times, but it was years ago and my radar was not set to "vinyl." I'll definitely swing by the next time I'm down. Thanks!
