I'm in the market to purchase a new 4k Smart TV and although I've done some research, the reviews (which vary widely for the same sets) are driving me a bit nuts.

I was hoping that anybody that has recently purchased a TV might be able to help me out. What I'm looking for is a mid-range, 55 inch (or so), 4K, Smart TV.

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

You'll get some responses here but more specialized ones at AVS Forums.

No, but I gave you a place dedicated to it. It's free so go subscribe and ask there. You'll get loads of educated opinions about what you're most likely to be happy with.

I bought a Sony XBR series last year. My criteria would mainly be picture and connectivity. I’ve been very happy with my choice. There’s a depth and clarity about the picture that exceeded my expectations. I don’t view any 4K material, though.

Thank you sir, that's the type of info/review I'm after. Can you provide a model #?

There are only about a thousand choices. You might provide a little more information, like budget and approximate size and what your primary sources are.

But you’re going to get a limited response here, compared to going to Best Buy and/or Amazon and reading reviews from people who have recently bought new sets in your budget range. You can then maybe narrow it down to two or three that look best and go to AVS forum, CNET, etc. for specific reviews.

XBR-55X930D. It’s a nice TV, as far as I’m concerned. Very thin. Good looking simple base. I use the digital audio output, but the speakers on the TV aren’t too bad. The Android operating system and built-in Chromecast is convenient and familiar for me.

I went for an LG OLED when I upgraded last year. The LG and Sony OLEDs looked the best to me.

Love my LG - OLED tv.

Little pricey but I feel it's worth it.

I agree with @Deesky and @MJConroy above: buy the best LG you can afford, preferably an OLED.

I bought an OLED 4K LG 55 inch for €1000 this January. Great with Netflix.
Worth getting if you can stretch to it. It's like looking through a window.

Sadly, OLED isn't in my budget, but thanks for the suggestions.

Then I would look at the TCL sets just listed above. It has gotten good reviews and fits your budget.

So, I've checked out numerous 3* customer reviews on the TCL 6-series and I'm not convinced that this would be a good purchase for me. While I am not a movie fanatic, one of the main reasons for wanting to upgrade is for improved picture quality...and, from what I'm reading, the TCL set has serious vertical banding issues (bad if one likes to watch sports, specifically). So, guess I'm still open to suggestions. Thanks.

Google “best tv for sports”. I think the results should lean toward Sony.

I've never seen any vertical banding on the TCL TVs that I got for my brother and my sister. I love the Roku interface, and any other "smart" TV is a pale imitation.

I just bought a Sony X900F 55" to replace my old Pioneer plasma. I researched for about a month and came to the conclusion that the Sony X900F was the best bang for the buck. Sure there are better TV's but you'll need to spend a lot more. We have had it for about 3 week now and are very happy with it. It looks great right out of the box with the default settings.

    Check out Vincent's review...

I couldn't afford an OLED, but I am more than happy with my 2 LG 4k tv's... one is 65" and one is 43"

I'm 99% sure this one is mine...
