In the spirit of a series of threads by @Cachiva, and also for the historical significance thereof, we bring forth the charted singles on both sides of the pond from June 9, 1973 (or as in the UK, 09 June 1973).

This date was significant because in this day's issue of Billboard, the methodology for compiling the Hot 100 changed considerably, owing to a sharp decline in singles sales, and to account more for one-stops and radio airplay. Because of this change, that week's chart did not have any "last week" column for that week only; it will be added manually here for continuity purposes in spite of the methodology being different. This week's Hot 100 was also the first to mention songwriters according to this formula:

    TITLE - Artist
(Producer), Writer, Label, Number (Distributing Label)

Up to then, it had been (since 1966, with the last attribute added in 1970):

    TITLE
Artist (Producer), Label, Number (Distributing Label)

And so for comparison and contrast, here they are:

    The chart positions of those on both charts will be carried as UK (US): 04 (33), 07 (08), 09 (07), 11 (18), 17 (13), 18 (58), 22 (02), 27 (31), 34 (75), 35 (01), and 44 (06). Notice how behind one or more charts were in some artists' singles.

    Those in my collection (all based on the Hot 100 positions) would be #1 - 6, 10 - 20, 22 - 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 33, 42 (from original 1969 "Honky Tonk Women" of which this was the B side), 43 - 45, 48, 49, 51, 57 - 61, 64, 69, 73, 79, 81 (whose B side was a certain ballad called "Sunshine On My Shoulders") and 93. From the UK side, outside of the U.S. charted singles, I'd have (all U.S. copies) #1 (in promo form), 6 (ditto), 13 - 16, 19, 31 (the last U.S. RAK single), 37 and 46.

As with the other threads of this ilk, the challenge is to pick one song, and share a memory, trivia, tidbit, rant or something that other members might find of interest.

Oh, and by all means, please comment on as many songs as you like!

Bad Weather by the Supremes was written and produced by Stevie Wonder. It was to be followed by an album written and produced by Stevie. The relative failure of the record which failed to catch fire on the US Chart meant the album was cancelled leaving us with a tantalising sliver of what might have been. Stevie moved onto successful projects with Minnie Riperton, Chaka Khan & Rufus and his ex wife Syreeta in the following months.

"Back When My Hair Was Short" - great song. I seem to remember this song suffered when they revamped the charts.

Second week on the UK chart for Wings "Live and Let Die" at #37 on its way to topping out at #9. It hasn't entered the US chart yet, perhaps Capitol delayed its release in the US as they did not want to compete with "My Love" which was still at #1.

I think I heard this once and it had weird screechy vocals towards the end.

Wonder why "You Can't Always Get What You Want" was on the U.S. chart in '73.

"Frankenstein" by the Edgar Winter Group gives me a question. When was the last time an instrumental was a top 5 hit?

"Miami Vice" theme or "Axel F" in the mid 80s maybe?

The clash of styles and genres in the Hot 100 Top 10 alone is indicative of what made listening to the radio so much fun back then.

It really is shame the single was not more successful. I've heard another song Stevie produced for them at the time ("Soft Days"), but I didn't like it as much.

    I was wondering that too.

I was 6 years old at the time. A lot of these songs bring back memories of riding around with my mom while she ran errands, sometimes leaving me in the car to play with the radio! Different times.

Absolutely no one was playing this in these parts and after reading a review in RS, I took a leap of faith and bought the album. I loved the retro feel on several tracks, all the homages to 60s styles dressed up in 1973 finery. Played it a lot over the next few months and still enjoy it today.

Odd that “Daniel” wasn’t on the UK chart, unless I missed it. Maybe it hadn’t been released yet.

I've always thought that if the Beatles had continued, they would have sounded like 10cc.

Beacuse it wasn’t ever a single until then, according to this:

You Can't Always Get What You Want - Wikipedia

Why it wasn’t a single (Well, it was B-side… But not an A-side) back in 1969. Why it was chosen for reissue in ‘73, however, no idea.

I’m suprised to learn it wasn’t a top 40 hit (In Billboard… Cashbox had it at #34). It’s certainly a classic. Just not the hit single most of us likely thought it was.

Rockit predates both Miami Vice and Axel F and those both went to #1.

    Maybe something by Kenny G?

"Daniel" had a run much earlier in the year on the UK chart. His next single, "Saturday Night's Alright For Fightin'," was being prepped for release.

I know many 60s US hits found their way onto the UK charts in the 70s, Motown stuff for example but what was the reason for that Gene Pitney record's appearance? It was never a single release in the US and seems an odd choice.

I completely lost track of the charts part way into the 2000s but up until that point, the Miami Vice tune was the last time an instrumental hit the top.

I know Mr. Pitney had more of a following in the UK than the U.S. for certain . . .

One of those dreadful, sappy Macca singles at US #1. He had a few of those in the 1970s.

Now I invite one and all, if they have the ability to do screencaps from the Billboard of this ish', plus its UK counterparts Music Week and/or Record Mirror (both of which published the BMRB's "official" chart), for a larger picture.

I will be bringing up some 45's along the way. The "Frankenstein" on the chart was the second single release and edit:
An earlier, different edit was issued on 5-10945 as the intended flip of "Hanging Around," but Billboard charted that first release before switching to this one (and to add insult to injury, the first edit to my knowledge is not represented on YouTube).

The real oldie in terms of releases is the Clint Holmes record, originally released one year to the month before (in June 1972), reviewed in the Aug. 26, 1972 Billboard ish - and didn't enter the Hot 100 until March 24! Who knows what it took to finally propel this to where it was headed (a DJ in one of the major cities?). I have the very first label variant:
By the time these two reached their peaks, Epic had a newer label design with an 'e' logo that would be used through 1978-79.

Warner Bros. was on fire during this period. Leading the pack was "Long Train Runnin'," the oldest of this batch, so much so first-pressings were among the last to use the 'green label':
Not long after, a new 'palm trees' label was instituted:

The other 45's are in my collection, namely:

    As for this . . .
    [IMG] [IMG]
Apparently, different radio stations played different versions of this. Some people in some regions remember hearing the live version from Made In Japan; my own memory is hearing the edited studio version from Machine Head, as from WABC Musicradio 77 in New York.

Then among the last to use the infamous 'blocks' labels of both ABC and Dunhill:
Later copies switched to the older rainbow box labels for both. In the case of the latter, Three Dog Night's version left B.W. Stevenson's in the dust.

Notice that, apart from "Frankenstein" later in the year, none of these made a dent in the UK charts.
