    Great post

I’ve been thinking this about Mr Raymond myself

his playing on these shows is amazing, what an absolutely brilliant musician

It was always amazing how the lights out album itself was such a huge jump in sound quality ... I always put it down to Ron Nevison, but Paul must have had quite the influence on sound too.

I also heard that Phil/The band were rather perturbed that most of Chrysalis money at the time was going to the Babys in both promotion and royalties

I wish I still had the source for this

on another note that The Babys/Broken Heart is in my all time too 20 albums

some may scoff at this, but this album sounds quite different to what you may think ( although isn’t it time is on this album and sounds nothing like the rest of the album)

it sounds absolutely majestic, produced by Ron Nevison, to me it’s like a pop version of Led Zeppelin ..... I may get taken the piss out of for this, but don’t tease until you’ve at least given it a chance

I didn't know who UFO were until about 82, but I remember TV ads in New York promoting The Baby's in the late 70's. By 82 I was living in the San Francisco bay area. I saw UFO at the San Francisco Civic Center as headliners with Aldo Nova and Stranger in 82. I remember Baby's albums in the stores and see them now and again in used bins, but am not familiar with the music. I'm not as averse to AOR/Arena rock as a lot of people here....I like all the Journey albums though Escape, and the 1st 3 by Foriegner. I quite like Boston. I like Styx through Pieces of Eight.

I do have my limitations and don't like anything by Journey or Foreigner/ outside what I mentioned.....Those are real rock records.
Anyway I'll check out that Baby's album.

I'd split hairs with you about Nevison production on Lights Out and Obsession, think his recorded drum sound sucks there....That said, he nailed Strangers in the night..and Andy's drums sound great on these other gigs were listening to. Nevison did some good work with The Who.

I like the Lights Out studio sound, that would be my choice prodcution wise. I get where you're coming from with Obsession though, it sounds like the beginning of that Nevsion 80'S drum sound.

OK maybe I'm due to play Lights Out and reconsider. I actually just ordered original CDs of No Heavy Petting/Lights Out/Obsession so complete my original CD collection for Schenker/UFO....Paid dearly for No Heavy Petting, but it's done with.

28.09 USD with shipping and tax........On the upside, it is near mint, and I don't think there will ever be a better mastering.
This will end up being my 4rth copy. Won't better my vinyl, but it will the BGO and Chrysalis years.
There just weren't that many 80s CD's released in the US of 70s UFO.
Shipping of CD's from the UK tends to be 12 or 13 bucks... Before covid I doing pretty good buying stuff from Germany, with very reasonable shipping from there. Even bought some LP's off Amazon Germany because I believed they were from a better pressing plant.

I think with No Heavy Pettin, I quite liked the Japan CP 21 6034..... With the other Schenker Studio albums I think the US Orginals are best...... but the No Heavy Pettin was the one where I’m never sure between the US and Japan originals

The Japan originals for the Schenker albums are certainly ‘brighter’, the US sound closer to the LP rips I have apart from the mentioned No Heavy Pettin

If you want to PM me feel free to save threadcrapping, just in case anyone isn’t interested in me going on and on about UFO stuff

I pre ordered from Amazon and still haven’t received the set, I’ve seen more than a few here in the same Dec 9-31 shipping status. I’m patiently enjoying streaming the shows.

Ahh that’s good then, you get to hear them at least. Not good for the shipping though.

What do you think of them so far?

I’m just amazed at six nights on the trot, they turned out such amazing performances.

Considering how absolutely blasted with both drugs and alcohol they were, according to the many sources I’ve read over the years, it just proves how tight as a band they were.

I am slightly hyperbolic at the moment and superlatives are flowing rather freely, but this set is wonderful.

Ok, it maybe could have been mastered with a touch less compression, but considering some of terrible remasters and reissues I’ve heard over the years I think it’s probably the best anyone could expect. At least the eq on the mastering seems nice to my ears.

I think the actual mixes are just brilliant, Schenker on the right Raymond on the left and drums, bass and vocals nicely in the middle.

I agree that this set of shows proves how solid UFO were as a live act in the 70's, as for the drink/drugs I think a lot of those stories are blown out of proportion, sure some members might indulge post show but for the most part they know that they need to be on when performing onstage. Any band where most of the members are wasted onstage would be a mess live and beyond sloppy.

A great post.. we’ll never know just how loaded they were, as the tales they tell seem to get taller in every interview

Billy Sheehan: my best and worst gigs ever | MusicRadar

Here’s just a taste of Billy Sheehan filling in for Pete Way in 83. A different time obviously, but just one insight into how that band rolled.

Yeah you’ve pretty much hit on everything that’s so great about this set! These guys were road warriors and so consistent across all of the shows. I’m a bass player so I’m digging really getting to hear Pete’s parts and as noted what a secret weapon Raymond was.

That’s the thing about UFO, Schenker was an absolute genius guitarist and obviously came up with some amazing riffs.... But the other chaps took what Schenker had and made absolute gold.

Now the Chapman period UFO has some great stuff, but nothing compared to the Schenker era.

Mogg/Way/Chapman could write some superb songs themselves, but the trio of Way/Mogg/Schenker as a songwriting team, however they cut up the songwriting credits, was an absolute tour de force.

Add Paul Raymond superb musicianship and Andy Parker’s solid drumming..... Just wow

I was far too young too ever see them in their prime and I only ever saw that line up on the Walk On Water tour in 1998... and unfortunately decided that a few drinks should be had before the show, so my memories of it are rather vague.

What I do remember is thinking, who is the guitarist, where’s Michael. As there was a guitarist with black hair holding a Flying V. I then realised that was Michael. Obviously having dyed his hair black. I’m not misremembering that at all.

just went to set list fm and they have this show listed

UFO Setlist at London Astoria, London

I do remember Phil introducing a lot of songs as “ this is something from strangers”

  23. I keep playing the songs in this box set that weren't included on the original album - especially "On with the Action". Phantastic song. But I am also enjoying discovering the alternate versions of some of the classics. "Let It Roll" is growing on me once again - the oscillation between the harder, faster parts and the very emotional, slow solo, wow.

The Wild, the Willing and the Innocent is much better as the last Schenker album.
