It was early to mid 90s, so yes before PayPal. I think I paid by postal order. If I remember correctly I was refunded about £25 which was 100 times the first class letter post at the time. The record had cost me about £50 with post and packing. A lot of money at the time and the most I have ever paid for a record.
What Gary Clail record was £50 back then? you could probably have got him to perform it live for that.
Must be the promo of Human Nature with Billy Graham samples. For a brief moment it was heavily in demand.
Thanks, that's what I thought, those records aren't easy for me to access, I don't recall anything about a banned version, there again there's a lot of things I don't recall from the eighties and nineties.
Some On-U things were so hard to find they may have well been banned, though all the Clails and Tackheads seemed to be everywhere, somebody could publish a really nice fully illustrated On-U discography, I'm surprised the Japanese haven't attempted it, I think I have three new On-U releases on order, it's just like the mid-eighties again.
Did you get into a late night bidding war on the telephone for that one. I think I was the other bidder!
It’s possible that confusing the Gary Clail track with the cover of the original release of Women In Uniform by Iron Maiden. That had an image of Margaret Thatcher in a uniform holding a firearm which was banned/withdrawn. The se
Oh, OK. I did once and let the other guy have it when it went to £50. A little while later I was in touch with another On-U fan - possibly after selling them some tunes - and mentioned I'd lost out on the Clail 12" and they said they were the winning bidder and that it had arrived with a chunk broken off it
That sounds about right. Your memory is better than mine then. I didn’t remember the telephone bidding but did you give me lots of On-U discography info as well selling me the records?
On-U Sound In The Area - On-U Sound Records discography - Part 1: LP1-LP60 There's the above site, but it looks outdated now.
This is one worth looking out for - it seems to be a UK-only single disc redux of this forum favourite 4CD box-set using the same Ted Jensen mastering, which is generally acknowledged as being the best-sounding Aretha on CD. I can't see that it has ever been discussed here, presumably due to the forum's largely US-based membership. The early mono numbers in particular sound absolutely great. Discogs link: Aretha Franklin - Queen Of Soul: The Very Best Of Aretha Franklin On a side note, I can't listen to the opening of Day Dreaming without adding Bagpuss's yawn.
