Bon Jovi and Massive Attack, 50p each Trojan Reggae 2cd compilation, 10p!! Saw the Peter Gabriel -‘ Shaking The Tree’ yesterday for 25p (from the shop now asking only 10p), left it as I thought I already owned it (I didn’t). It was gone when I checked back today. Still, I don’t begrudge the £2 at ASDA for this great compilation.
Had a look in Carnforth this morning, but came away with nothing (except for a paperback book). There was a Best of Thin Lizzy CD, 50p, but the disc looked like it was beginning to turn bronze, so I left it. Other than that one, the CD stock in the two shops was basically the same as it was last week. Very disppointing. If anyone's interested, one shop had five K. D. Lang CDs.
I have a question. Three reviewers on Amazon UK have been less than complimentary about this cd (A U.K edition) I picked up yesterday, stating that the U.S version is vastly superior in SQ. Having listened to my version, I can state I’m happy with the sound. If anyone reading this has (or has heard) both the U.S and U.K, is the U.S really a significant sonic improvement?
I picked up the Thorogood compilation in July. Just got round to listening to it tonight. If you like blues with Elmore James style licks, you're in for a treat. I defy anyone to listen to this and not move!
I found a Thorogood comp earlier this year, it was excellent; wasn't familiar with his recorded stuff, but I saw him and the Destroyers supporting the Rolling Stones many years ago, along with J. Geils and Joe Jackson, and Thorogood was the standout act that day.
A couple of months almost, since I last went to my usual store. Joe Cocker 'The Best Of' (1983). Wendy Matthews 'Stepping Stones - The Best Of' (1999). Glenn Shorrock 'Meanwhile...Acoustically' (2007). Chris Isaak 'Forever Blue' (1999) my other copy is 'lost' in my collection somewhere! Joe Strummer '001' (2018) unfamiliar with his post Clash material. All cd titles AU$2.00
Two cds that I see fairly often that I’d previously never considered, despite owning and really liking the first two TFF albums and two of the big singles from ‘Seeds of Love’ that I have on the ‘Tears Roll Down’ best of cd. Always found ‘Constant Craving’ by K.D Lang to be a melancholy yet catchy song. An album’s ubiquity in charity shops makes it seem less desirable to me. Silly mindset really as it’s the music that’s of value.
If you've been avoiding Recurring Dream by Crowded House, pick up the next copy you see! It's the best of all the very frequent flyers, in my book. The inverse is true too I guess, I'm probably guilty of leaving charity shops with albums I suspect I might not actually like just because they never turn up. There's a sense of now or never. They tend to end up re-donated to Oxfam if I bounce off them as expected. *side-eyes unlistened-to 50p copy of Strictly Personal by Captain Beefheart album on nearby shelf*
I bought ‘Recurring Dream’ cd from a Chazza four years ago. Wonderful compilation for the casual fan with great sound quality too. Also guilty of buying stuff I suspect I won’t like just because it was an uncommon find and/or was critically acclaimed. I’m looking at you ‘Trout Mask Replica’ I still own albums I bought at £12-15 upon release that I’ll never part with because I still think they’re great, despite being available in at least 5 local Chazza’s at any given time. Examples: ‘Everything Must Go’ and ‘This Is My Truth…’ by Manic Street Preachers. Different Class’ - Pulp. ‘Tellin’ Stories’ - Charlatans (best of). Certain albums that have been replaced by lesser SQ remasters on streaming sites also influences my decision to keep stuff that the rest of society wants rid off (see 90’s Manics albums).
I found some excellent mainly 1980s finds in one of my local charity shops today, all of them the original CD version: Van Halen - Van Halen Van Halen - 1984 Van Halen - 5150 Van Halen - OU812 Motorhead - No Sleep Til' Hammersmith Jane's Addiction - Ritual De Lo Habitual Poison - Open Up And Say... Ahh! The Clash - London Calling Television - Marquee Moon The Black Crowes - Shake Your Money Maker
Despite owning all the above except the latter two Van Halen and my copies of London Calling and Marquee Moon being the latest remasters; I’m slightly envious of your finding all the above in one charity shop in one visit Excellent haul! Is the Poison - Open Up… the uncensored original cover or the ‘eyes only’ black border version?
That original 1989 CD of Seeds of Love is audiophile quality. Mastered quietly, but worth cranking up as the dynamics are brilliant. I quickly rebought an original, the first time I saw one cheap in a charity shop, because the 1999 remaster despite the extra tracks is nothing near as good SQ. EG.
Two in Milnthorpe today, 50p each. Sonny Rollins - A Night at the Village Vanguard, 2CD Don Henley - I Can't Stand Still Read some bad news when I got home - another train strike on Saturday, 30th September. I was intending to travel to Stoke-on-Trent by train that day to see French Boutik play an evening gig there - I can still manage to get to Stoke with a combination of National Express and a couple of regular service buses, but will the band be able to get there from London okay, or will they have to cancel? Still waiting on that. Then I was going to London on the Sunday (as are French Boutik) by the first train of the day, which I've already bought the ticket for. That first train might not be running, so I need to ask tomorrow at Lancaster ticket office (still open for business, thank goodness!) if my ticket will be valid on other services if that first train is cancelled.
I've never come across a copy of Seeds Of Love in a charity shop. I have it on vinyl but it's one of those CDs I'm always hoping to spot.
My copy is a circa-mid 1990s repress (it has a mould SID code but the rest of the disc looks exactly like a typical late 1980s one, making me think this is possibly a pressing about late 1994 or 1995 when SID codes were first introduced; there is no master SID code) with the censored cover, although it's definitely the 1988 master (is scores DR16 which is unusually high).
Not including my purchase, I’ve probably seen 6 others this year. All of them the 1999 remasters except a highly, deeply scratched original copy still sitting in a local charity shop. On Wednesday, my local Asda had 2 original mastering versions for £2 in its preowned cd stand. A bit pricier than a charity shop, check if your local Asda has any. If I chance upon another copy, I’ll send you one. I still keep a few of those bubble wrap ‘music magpie’ envelopes for sending cds.
I decided earlier to check out the 2018 hi-res/Apple digital master of Open Up and… It’s LOUD and horrible, The drums and bass (which admittedly were always ‘small’ sounding on a Tom Werman production) kinda disappear on heavier songs sections. Making that original cd all the more desirable, although I think it’s mastered too quietly. Would love to see a DR 10-12 hi res re-release.
Just played the cd. I liked it a lot. ‘Advice For The Young At Heart’. ‘Woman In Chains’ and the title track still impress as they did when first hearing them in my early teens. Can’t fathom why I haven’t bought this 34 year old album until today.
I’m on track 5 of the K.D Lang now. I recall you speaking highly of it. I’m liking what I’m hearing. Great songs, lovely production and mastering too (pre-loudness era, Chris Bellman at the mastering desk). This is the sort of disc I’d play to those who’ve jumped on the vinyl resurgence, then convinced themselves only vinyl will do and ALL digital is poor. Which is a few people I know. I’ll stop posting for today, I’m clogging up the thread
Does anyone here know if that Poison CD that I bought earlier was mastered with preemphasis? It scores DR16 and is pretty bright sounding but my computer didn't detect a preemphasis flag (which it often doesn't on releases known to have it).
You recall correctly! It's not only one of my favourite CDs, but as you say the sound/production/mastering is top-notch - 1992 was really the peak of how good contemporary music *could* sound in the right hands. EG.
To find any Don is quite unusual, to find that first solo CD even moreso...and then at that price! It's not quite on a level with his other albums, but has the incomparable Dirty Laundry. EG.
I bought the 12" Dirty Laundry back in the day, but had never heard the album until now. Brilliant single. I remember a friend commenting on its similarity to Bowie's Let's Dance, but Laundry was recorded two months before Let's Dance.
