    for Rage in Eden

Ultravox - Rage In Eden - Steven Wilson Stereo Mix - CDx2 – Rough Trade

This is a new Steven Wilson Stereo Mix of Ultravox's Rage In Eden album from 1981. Taken from the deluxe CD box set release of Rage In Eden, this LP or CD version of the mix is exclusive to RSD. Like 2020's RSD SW mix of their Vienna album, the second disc contains an instrumental version of the album which is exclusive to this release.

Happy that's another US release. What is it with RSD USA actually distributing the Ultravox titles I really want? [not that I'm complaining…] I swear every Ultravox title in the last few years has been a US release. Even that 1977 live LP!

Not sure how Ultravox decides to release what, but I can't say I really expected the amount of quality re-releases for what I have thought was a criminally overlooked band as far as their LPs and they had no truly bad albums until Cann was booted

Rage in Eden sounds amazing to my ears as is - I really hope Wilson will do Quartet, that's not a horribly produced album though it's the most interesting to me as a, would Quartet benefit or detract from it... I recall both Wilson and Bowness on their Album Years series in the 1984 episode, both cited Lament as a good release

They also mutually enjoyed Vienna and Metamatic, with a quote from some old magazine brought up that basically read "Yes becomes new wave on Drama!" and "Wow! Ultravox is the new era of prog" from the same publication

    Came to post this

Figured this would be the most interesting bits regarding, the state of Ultravox reissues however the full article is essential reading. I also never thought in my entire life Rage in Eden and Brilliant are Midge Ure's two favorite Ultravox albums, but it does confirm two things

Midge Ure is the most self aware and positive long career musician that I know of
This man is somehow a New Romantic progenitor that has done more than basically all of his contemporaries and still can't break in the US

I mean, even OMD charted here - they couldn't even sell U Vox in 1986. HOW

Easy. Chrysalis USA. They signed to the wrong label to break in America. They were very lucky the UK division has a better handle on what they had. But when Midge Ure left Chrysalis in 1991 he signed to a much worse label; Arista. That he liked "Brilliant" so much was very troubling to read for me. It must have been down to the two other members of the band coming to his home in Canada to record that he enjoyed so much, because his vocals on "Brilliant" sound like he's passing a kidney stone on too many of its songs! Most of the material was egregious and I have a hard time determining which I dislike more: "UVOX" or "Brilliant." There were at least 2 1/2 good songs on "Brilliant' but the worst of it eclipsed anything on "UVOX" for my ears. So listening to it always makes me angry but the time the album has ended. That they had one chance to bow out on a grace note and they flubbed it.

Let’s hope we eventually get a Brilliant SDE where we discover that Midge sang in his usual range on the demo’s! I find his voice so off-putting that it’s hard to assess the actual songwriting.

Found a great cleaned up bootleg from the "Ultravox is dead" era

February 1979 - nothing incredible, but this is probably the best quality recording from this tour I've heard. Robin is on point with the older songs

I was at a record store and only managed to find a copy of Rage in Eden/instrumental disc on vinyl

I have not ran into Ultravox used once in real life. I'll take pretty much anything from their catalog, it just never seems to appear in this part of the US. No singles, LPs, nothing.

If negative1 has made that collection without using the Internet, I'll be amazed. In general UK synth is difficult to find in the used bins around here, which shouldn't surprise me but it's annoying

I occasionally see Ultravox CDs in other cities. Akron has a great store that always has this material: Time Traveler Records.

That copy of "Ha! Ha! Ha!" was the 2015 French copy of the remaster, with OBI. My loved one later bought that on the sly as a birthday present! John Foxx got equal representation with the amazing boxed set of "Metamatic!'

Ultravox are rare birds in the US southeast, however! Hotlanta is where the records all seem to gravitate.

It honestly still is an odd choice for a single - from what I know, Serenade got close to being the final single, has a 7" edit and all, but for reasons I have no context for other than it wasn't the band's choice instead of the more obvious dance pop track

Probably also a 4/5 from me now, you really have to like the more decadent edges of this band for it to work though. It's probably the most Rage in Eden sounding track on the record, read, it needs more than a few listens

Okay fine, I lied. I have never heard a cover so convincing in my life, like, WOW

Got lucky again yesterday surfing the used LPs bin at a local antique mall, who have a vintage gear & records dealer in them.

Nice 12" copy of The Voice, and a promo to boot, hence the bland, boring cover.

It's in good shape, too, probably a VG for many people. So whatever station got this, they either didn't play it much, or possibly dumped it to tape / cart.

Same song, both sides. Well worth the $6 it cost me.

Got the really cool Peter Saville design aesthetic sticker however, and yeah, I'd say The Voice is worth $6 on it's own merits. A song that feels way closer to 3 minutes, might be the obvious single but what a killer song regardless

Worth it for the hype sticker! The only Ultravox US promo 12" I have [according to Discogs, anyway] out of the nearly 200 discs is "One Small Day." Which also had a hype sticker [black sleeve] based on the Saville art on the UK single.

It’s odd that they were specifically marketing it as AOR, which isn’t a term I’ve ever considered for One Small Day!

You're forgetting college radio in those days. Admittedly a smaller segment, but as music director for my college station, I was doing my best to get them the airplay I thought they deserved.

Fans of Ultravox and similar 'New Wave' bands knew the left part of the dial was the place to find the more adventurous bands and artists.
