Slowly clawing my way through Herbie's massive 34CD box set. Chameleon and Watermelon Man are classics. "Side 2" is a little weaker. Of the 2 I've listened to so far, I prefer Sextant.
I've been listening to a lot of CTI jazz records lately, great stuff there. This one is pretty impressive, specially when you have time for and don't mind 15 - 20 minutes of improvisation. Ron Carter - Billy Cobham + Airto section, just perfect. And my favourite trumpet player Freddie Hubbard is there as well.
So good! Nothing beats lyrics or written text in your mother tongue.
Just before you went Headhunting, I took off to the funky cosmos a few hours earlier. The record never fails me, great stuff. That is a massive box you get to have fun going through. When I got home from an outing last evening, a musical curveball hit me betwixt the ears and I went fusion instead of my 'planned set'. It worked out just fine though. This looks great, nice line up too, I will have to hunt it up. Cobham's Stratus got my attention along with some Brand X last night as well as Herbie Hancock. I figured that would clear the house of my daughter and her friends and going out on the town a little sooner than they were planning. Actually, one of the youngsters was digging on the bottom end of Stratus. lol
Saturday's alright for rockin' live--some old faves from a little ways back. All really enjoyable live records '69-'73. Marley's live record is my favorite of his, with most of the Wailers still with him except for Bunny W, who had just left... an incredible 'Rasta burn' before reggae became fashionable and took off in the States. ~PLAY THIS MUSIC _____ LOUD~
This is likely more Soft Machine than any of you want, but they did venture into free jazz while Wyatt was still with the group. This needs to be officially released. Things actually got a bit more wild in the latter half of 1971 when Phil Howard replaced Wyatt, but this should be wild enough for y'all, including @Crispy Rob. This is totally where my musical head is at these days.
I’m continually amazed that we can enjoy stuff like that so easily on the internet. Back in the day that would’ve only been found on an ultra-expensive VHS bootleg that one would’ve had to search for or get through mail-order.
I know and agree entirely. That said, it probably hasn't been released officially because the licensing is too expensive considering expected demand, which is a damn shame. Soft Machine (perhaps not so much this particular era) is reasonably well-regarded here, but we're not the general music-buying public. Still, I want this on my shelf from an official source and I want the surviving musicians and/or heirs to get their cut.
Holy crap, I've died and gone to heaven. At Starbucks where I hang there's this older guy Mike that works there. For the last year we nerd out about music to each other whenever I come in. He invited me to his place to check out his collection. Good lord. He's got 5 record shops' worth of stuff in his apartment. He's been collecting since the '70s and knows people that worked at labels etc and has all kinds of special promos and posters and displays and things. He's got about 500 different autographed albums and pictures as well, verified and everything. Today I held in my hands signatures by ELP, Peter Gabriel-Genesis, Paul Stanley, Peter Criss, Ace Frehley, Gene Simmons, Katharine Hepburn, Robert Plant, Jack Nicholson, David Bowie, Frank Sinatra, FRANK ZAPPA! You name it he had it. I mean, I don't normally give a crap about autographs, but when you've got Frank Sinatra's in your hand, it kinda hits you a little bit!!!! Dang! He also had the original print of the cover of Frank Zappa's "Roxy By Proxy" release - the one with Frank sitting down with his SG holding the cup of coffee up. Got it and a couple other things in an auction from the Utility Muffin Research Kitchin, complete with coffee stains and cigarette burns I have held something that was in Frank Zappa's hands. I'm checking out guys, see you in the next life!
