I used to listen to the Residents in college to lull me to sleep at night, had crazy dreams later of course !
I have most of his albums, but I'm missing a couple from the 80's (his least interesting period). I only have a couple of their albums. I'm not very fond of their vocal work. Instrumental extravaganzas are generally welcomed, but I'm more traditional when it comes to vocals. I can enjoy them conceptually, though.
It seems ironic being that he is not connected with it at all, seemingly. Still though, I feel like his influence from the first few albums is draped all over Stranded. It is one of my picks from their catalog as well.
I can't help getting goosebumps when I listen to "Strange Fruit". Thankfully, Commodore didn't give a damn about the reactions of racists and let her record the song in 1939 (we can't say the same about Columbia). Even though my favorite Lady Day is the post-war one, this is a great period in her career.
...I’ve been on vacation from the job for a week now, go back Monday (booooo) and I’ve gone through the Oh Sees discography about six times in that week. A killer body of work. Creatively all over the place, but flows nicely one after the other. In any order. One of my favorite bands still killin it. @bzfgt knows NP: ...makes a nice extended album together (from the same sessions). Excellent old school California country music. Rockabilly boogie from '49. To me, this is more rock n roll than Bill Haley five years later... I think that might be a 16 year old Roy Nichols playing the guitar. He later played with Merle Haggard in the Strangers.
First Mingus album for Atlantic. Highly recommended. If I weren't typing on a cell phone, I would add more details.

I've never been much interested in the Davis/Evans collaborations, but I like this album, technical flaws and all.
