And how. What always surprised me is that "Ole" was never used as a vehicle for stretched-out improv ala "India" and "Spiritual" which were contemporaneous. Not much could make the VV sets better.....except for an "Ole"....I mean, Dolphy was there for chrissake.
Much as I love the idea of a stretched out, face melting live "Ole", there's something really cool about the one version being this uber-perfect studio recording. What makes it more remarkable is this was a contractual obligation record, as he was already recording for Impulse!, having made Africa/Brass a couple of days (!) before Ole.
Good to know. I have the 2003 Columbia SACD - have you ever compared? I've been fairly happy with that plus the mono box CD version, but would definitely consider an upgrade if better sounding versions are out there.
This is BAD. Finally replaced my decades lost LP with this CD. It sounds pretty good. This album (and its singles) was the cornerstone of my music collection at the time. I wish some key mixes were still available easily. KROQHD2 still plays some of them from time to time, which is great.

I don't have an SACD player, but the redbook layer is actually good, so I'm sure the SACD is wonderful. The mono box CD is very good, as are really all of them in that set. There's something about the warmth and dynamic range of those early DCC and MoFi gold discs that set them apart to me, the ability to crank them without a bit of fatigue. Most amazing estate sale find ever was about 11-12 years ago, a collection of about 60 MoFi and DCC discs before I had any idea they were what they were (I actually joined the forum after researching them here). I bought about ten, and after getting home discovered that I had left a treasure trove behind. Didn't sleep much that night, and hauled ass up there the next morning, fully expecting them to all be gone. There they were, sitting untouched from the day before. Got around 60 of them for about $80. Ridiculous.
That's one of those pre-'68 records where it's good to have both the mono and stereo, like the first Moby Grape, the early Byrds records, and a few others that slip my mind at the moment.
Yep. Beautiful happenstance that I was going to my local with 30 or so records I was trading in. They smiled and said "this is your day". I cleared space and got a record I thought I'd never see in the wild.
Disc 4 of Summerteeth DE, which is the second disc of the 1999/11/1 show in Boulder, Co. Wilco. "That was really sweet of you, thank you very much. If I wasn't so heavily sedated I would have been really aroused." (Jeff's comments before "Can't Stand It.") "Can't Stand It" is weird because a segment of the keyboards on it sounds like In Through The Out Door, lifted from "All Of My Love." And after Jeff sings the refrain, "Your prayers will never be answered again," he says "I swear I'll never eat acid again." I don't think "California Stars" could be a better song if Jeff and Jay Bennett had actually written it with Woody Guthrie. wavethatflag reporting from Summerteeth DE.
