The Man From Gong: The Best Of Daevid Allen. Mostly taken from his solo work with some Gong, Planet Gong and New York Gong mixed in (plus one Soft Machine track).

Quick public service announcement: if you like competitive volleyball, the USA vs. Soviet-bloc country that shan't be named due to a doping scandal is awesome (NBCSN, end of match two). Two really great teams hammering at each other.

Joe Henderson plays on 3 of the 6 tracks. My favorite non-Joe track is #2, a (sometimes) wild piano-bass duet.

Thanks! I'm a big fan of Joe Henderson, and I also like the Mal Waldron title with Eric Dolphy. I've been meaning to check out more of his work.

I'm assuming by "the Mal Waldron title with Eric Dolphy" that you mean The Quest. There's a companion album under Ron Carter's name that has similar personnel entitled Where?

But if you really want to hear Dolphy at his best, IMO, it's on Ezz-thetic and 'Round Midnight on George Russell's Ezz-thetics. You'll know it when you hear him. He's like no one else on that record. Truly stunning. As Mingus once said (I'm paraphrasing here): Eric is beyond what we know to be jazz.

I wouldn't make it a habit of disagreeing with Mingus, but it's hard not to agree with that. Plenty of out players made their point, but often with the lack of a solid harmonic basis behind them. Dolphy could turn a solid harmonic construct on its ear in a matter of seconds and not only violate it, but adhere to it as well. Don't try this at home, folks.

    Here's Ezz-thetic. Dolphy's solo starts at 4:50:

Agree. That first self-titled Feat album is kind of an overlooked classic.

I was today years old, as the kids say, when I learned that Beginnings had a different mix.

one of the best ever, with a creepy "POCAHONTAS" and a more than fantastic "Harvest Moon"
Of course Neil has made dozens of memorable albums. We know it.

This UNPLUGGED goes, as far as I'm concerned, in "my personal TOP FIVE"

My memory is suspicious at best but I’m pretty sure they had to schedule this twice. The first time Neil didn’t perform. Right before he was about to go on stage he said it didn’t feel right so he split.

Probably can still be had for cheap for this great, excellent sounding album :)

Sloan - Smeared (DGC CD, 1992)

This is an odd record in that it's the debut of a very long-running band but sounds nothing at all like the rest of their output. It's as if they jumped on the grunge bandwagon for a second, it didn't feel right, so they immediately changed course and have remained steady with their power pop approach over albums 2-12.

I bought the 6/28/74 download from the DGM site a few years ago - it’s one of my favorite KC shows.
