Roy Brooks, Understanding (2021). Recorded live in Baltimore in 1970. This arrived in the mail yesterday. It's a 2-CD set. Most tracks are 20 minutes plus. Roy Brooks was a drummer from Detroit known (unfortunately) as much for his mental illness as for his playing. I actually met Roy Brooks once. And by "met" I mean we exchanged hellos as we passed each other. It was starting to sprinkle rain inside a prison in Jackson, MI - I was there investigating a prisoner suicide, and he was there because of his bi-polar disorder and an altercation he had with a neighbor in Detroit (where Roy wielded a bullwhip). While preparing for my visit to this particular prison facility, I knew Roy was there. And he lived in the housing unit where this other prisoner had jumped to his death. So I thought maybe I'd interview Roy as part of my investigation. But when I went to his housing unit, the officer said he was at his "programming" and wouldn't be back until later. As I was leaving, and it was starting to sprinkle/mist rain, I saw him shuffling toward his unit, walking with a cane. I recognized him because of his eyes, and as I got closer, it was obviously him. Anyway, I said hello as we passed and he responded in kind. I think he died about 5 years later. Edit: Here's his prison photo and the eyes I recognzied.
Can you guys help me out? I'm desperately trying to re-find a band that I discovered on here a few years back that I lost track of. Google is not helping at all. I've been searching for an hour.... Mid-80s British 2 or 3 albums (maybe 2 albums and an EP?) Pre-Oasis/The Verve sound kinda. Kinda melancholy and dreamy sounding at times 1 album cover had a lot of gray coloring along with one red and one yellow balloon. The 2nd album cover was blue water (members swimming in pool, I think). The first album was very dreamy and melancholy. The 2nd album was rockier, ala Oasis/"british rock and roll"
New one to me. All good, but especially caught by Bobby Timmons’ piano. Anyone able to recommend anything with him as leader? Edit. Looked round and cat is asleep on settee. Must be dreaming as appears to be twitching a paw in time to music
Awesome album!!! I've never ever gotten into Twice Removed, but I adore the rest of their whole output. Insane band and a wonderful debut. I love the raunchiness of it. It's more like sleazy glammy rock to me than grunge proper
Recall the track “Come To The Sabbat” from a sampler LP. Now that’s passed not sure I’ll play much more
Roy Brooks, The Free Slave (1972, reissued 1998 by 32 Jazz). Another burning quintet featuring Woody Shaw on trumpet and George Coleman on tenor, recorded live in April 1970 (a few months earlier in Baltimore like Understanding). I have the 32 Jazz CD release, which has a different cover than the original album. Original cover: Edit: Sorry, not the same club in Baltimore.
